6 Kaplan Student Orientation By now you should have completed the Kaplan Student Orientation. This orientation can be found on your Kaplan KU Campus page under My Classes "Current Courses" KU160. It will help you learn to navigate our course and assist you in succeeding in this class. In addition, the Kaplan Student Orientation will be available for you to review at any time on your KU Campus page.

Check each unit for assigned readings.

8 Announcements: Please be sure to read the announcements that I post in class. Some announcements will be to support you and give you the heads up on the following week, others will be reminders of due dates, holidays, and you will even find invitations to student learning communities & workshops. First Term Reference Guide: On your course home page, you will see a First Term Reference Guide. It will tell you who to contact for class questions, scheduling questions, technical issues, financial aid, student accounts, and where to go for study tips. Using this guide will put you in touch with the right person in a quick and timely manner!

9 Course Description This course will provide a format to plan your academic goals; determine course electives; review your reasons for entering the field of early childhood education & development; outline the field of early childhood education and development; and perhaps, most importantly, present a range of career/job possibilities. As we work together these next 10 weeks; please email me your questions & concerns.

10 Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Identify early childhood professional roles, responsibilities, and standards Use a variety of personal management tools, strategies and university resources to enhance learning Identify careers within the early childhood development field Apply basic knowledge of the early childhood professional role to program and professional goals Demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard English Assess historical events that influence contemporary culture.

13 Graded Reviews In units where there are graded reviews, please feel free to use your textbook to assist you in answering questions. Note that once you begin a review you must complete it within the designated timeframe.

14 Required Discussion #1 What is your current knowledge of a career as an early childhood professional? Please include both personal and professional experiences you have in the field and whether you working in the field now. Have you always wanted to work with young children? What led to your interest as an early childhood professional? What type of career in early childhood development do you see yourself working in as your future career? Your personal response should be @ 100 words; you are required to review & comment to a minimum of two classmates.

15 There are 4 Course Projects ● Unit 1: Complete a questionnaire about your experience and plans for the future. ● Unit 2: Review and select two jobs and use template for reporting. ● Review and select the elective classes for your Customized EC Development Degree Plan. ● Unit 7: 1-2 page essay sharing how the role of the early childhood professional is different from what it was in the past. 18 Teachers, teacher assistants, and caregivers in: - Campus children’s centers in two- and four-year higher education institutions - Private child care programs; Part-day preschool or nursery schools - Head Start and Early Head Start programs - Out-of-school-time programs - Prekindergarten, kindergarten programs in parochial/ private schools & community-based agencies - Family child care providers; home day care; Nannies (with license) - Early intervention specialists and others who provide education and care for children with disabilities and their families - Home visitors in Head Start, Early Head Start, and other programs - Child life specialists (in hospitals and other therapeutic settings)

19 Early childhood professionals who administer programs include: - Program directors, education managers, curriculum specialists, and others who manage programs or have oversight responsibilities for classrooms in the programs noted above - Principals in public, charter, and private schools that serve children from birth through third grade and their families - Public and private agencies that administer family child care networks

20 Professional development providers for these individuals include: - Faculty in two- and four-year and graduate programs in institutions of higher education - Adult educators and trainers in public and private organizations - Child care resource and referral (CCR&R) agency staff - Head Start / Early Head Start training and technical assistance providers - Program administrators who provide training and technical assistance to their staff
