Vocabulary amendment – a change made to a law, bill or document, in this case the U.S. Constitution. emancipate - to free slaves freedmen – a person who has been freed from slavery. suffrage - voting rights

Black Codes - laws passed in southern U.S. states after Reconstruction to deny African Americans' civil rights

Juneteenth January 1863 – Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves in the Confederacy (South) June 19, 1865 – Emancipation Day in Texas – Gordon Granger, a Union Major-General came to Galveston and issued the Emancipation Proclamation – Freed Texas slaves

Reconstruction Amendments (13 th ) Thirteenth Amendment – Abolished (ended) slavery in the U.S. (14 th ) Fourteenth Amendment – Equal rights and citizenship given to African Americans (15 th ) Fifteenth Amendment – Suffrage for African American males

Social Effects of Reconstruction Black Codes – State laws that limited rights of African Americans Ku Klux Klan – Terrorized African American voters and kept them from voting
