3 Sofia: the Capital of Bulgaria One of the oldest cities in Europe – 7,000 years of history Capital of Bulgaria for more than 120 years Rapid growth in the 20 th century: from 0.6 million people in the beginning, to 1 million people in the 80s to 1.6 million people nowadays

4 Sofia: in Need of Partnership As a result of the city’s rapid growth and its historically constrained road network, Sofia needs: innovative solutions to alleviate the traffic congestion and improve the transportation system (including acceleration of the subway construction); modern methods for community service (e.g. construction of waste processing plant, developing infrastructure, etc); construction of modern business and trade parks and residential districts.

19 Benefits from the Subway Extension Project Shorter transportation time to the city center: 10 - 12 min. (compared to 50-60 min in the rush hours currently) Traffic reduction by approximately 12% Reduction of the number of accidents with about 5% Reduction of harmful emissions – over 3,680 tones per year Reductions of the noise level along the routs with about 15 - 20 % Time saved to the population - 65,000 man hours per day Direct economic effect – $11.0 million per year Indirect economic effect – $11.8 million per year
