Definition Sudden and unexplained death of an infant under one year of age. Leading cause of death of infants under the age of one.

Occurrence 3,000 American babies die of SIDS each year. 8 will die before we meet tomorrow:( Most deaths occur in the first 6 months of age (95%) Peaks between 2 and 4 months Occurs in all races 5x more common in African Americans 2x more common in American Indians

SIDS is… More common in multiple births More common in premature babies More common in teen pregnancies

SIDS Risk Factors (controllable) Tummy Sleeping Smoking Narcotics use Unsafe Crib/ Bedding Asphyxiation

Sleep Position Babies should sleep on their backs. “Back to sleep, tummy to play” Sleeping on the back increases the risk of SIDS 18x

Smoking Babies of mother’s who smoke during pregnancy have a 3x greater risk of dying of SIDS. Secondhand smoke increases risk (2.5x) of SIDS Thirdhand smoke doubles risk of SIDS

Narcotics use Using narcotics during pregnancy increases risk of SIDS by 10x. Using marijuana during pregnancy increases risk of SIDS 4x.
