Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death among infants who are 1 month to 1 year old Most SIDS deaths are associated with sleep and infants who die of SIDS show no signs of suffering SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion, given only after all other possible causes of death have been ruled out through an autopsy, an examination of the death scene, and a complete review of the infant's medical history potential risk factors include: 1.smoking, drinking, or drug use during pregnancy 2.poor prenatal care 3.prematurity or low birth-weight 4.stomach sleeping
