A Comment On importance of what we collectively do at various institutions as a part of faculty governance. Protect our Rights to: Academic Freedom Explore fully within the field of assignment Exposition of the subject to students and others what a teacher believes to be the truth Citizen’s right to speak, write and action as an individual outside the university Education Policy Determine the education policy through deliberative actions within the units

Along with these Rights comes Responsibilities to Perform competently and effectively in assigned duties in teaching, research and service. Refrain from insisting that students or others adopt any particular point of view as authoritative in a controversy. Along with these Rights comes the Prerogative to Academic Tenure An appointment of indeterminate term to exercise without fear of dismissal or other disciplinary action ensuring academic freedom to conduct research, teaching and service missions

Summary Academic Freedom is a basic faculty Right Tenure is a vehicle needed to ensure academic freedom There can be no Academic Freedom without Academic Tenure
