Comenius 1 DIVERSITY AROUND US 1 st High School of Karditsa Greece December 2007

Our school This is the 1 st High School of Karditsa, Greece. It is the oldest and biggest high school of the area consisting of 45 teachers and about 400 students aged 15-18.

The first day of each new school year This is the day the vicar of the parish our school belongs to visits us to bless everyone and wish the best for the new school year.

Prizes Our headmistress awarding books as prizes to students who got excellent marks in their final exams to enter Universities and Colleges. This also takes place the first day of every new school year.

A short message from the President of Parents’ association The presence and help of the association of parents has always been necessary to support both students and staff’s efforts.

Students in class The school year starts on September 11 th and finishes in mid June. All three levels take final exams to go on the next class. Attending high school lessons is not compulsory in Greece, although the vast majority of students do not miss them.

October 28 th National holiday. Greeks celebrate their victory over the Italian troops during World War II. Students with high academic capabilities get a special praise while the top one becomes the flag-bearer, which is the greatest honour for a student.

Working in the lab Physics and Chemistry are taught in labs. So are computer lessons.

Physical Education and Games in the school yard There is no gym in our school due to the fact that the building is very old (1958). New schools in Greece have specially designed gyms.

Games Basketball, volleyball and handball teams often use the athletic park near our school to practice.

Music The school orchestra and choir liven up every activity.

March 25 th National holiday. Greeks celebrate their Independence day. This is a school parade in the centre of the town.

Carnival festivities at school I Each year a party is organised in the school hall. Loud music and snacks help students to forget their commitments for a while.

Carnival festivities at school II Students on the left and teachers on the right both enjoying moments of relaxation. Two parties are given at school every year. The second one is the farewell party at the end of each school year.

Special occasions I Students watching the total eclipse of the sun in the school yard using a special telescope. Very rare but also very interesting.

Special occasions II Our students welcoming the Euro in our town.

Special activities I Very often our school realizes excursions of either educational or environmental character. On the left students visiting the Parliament of Greece in Athens and on the right the impressive central hall where conferences take place.

Special activities II On the left students visiting the ancient theatre of Epidaurus and on the right a visit to the brand new Museum of technology (planetarium) in Salonika.

European projects I Our students visiting the European Parliament in Brussels.

European projects II Our students participating in a Mobility European project in Stockholm, Sweden.

European projects III Youth in Action in Madrid, Spain. The project was about Human Rights.

European projects IV Comenius 3 in Portoroz, Slovenia. The project was about relationships between parents and school.
