There were 21 California Missions stretching 650 miles from San Diego in the south to Sonoma in the north. Father Junipero Serra established the pattern for the missions, placing them about a days walk apart. Evidence of the Missions surround us today. Streets and towns are named after the missions. Often a buildings architecture is inspired by the missions. Mission bells and red tile roofs can be seen throughout California.
