3. Today’s Objective  Today we are going to evaluate the concept of geopolitics and why the Middle East attracted European Imperialists by using this lecture and our notebooks.

4. Ottoman Empires Loses Power  The largest Islamic Empire in history. Began in the 12 th century.  The rise to nationalist feelings –Empire was growing weak. –Many countries wanted to break away from the Empire and become independent.  Europeans seize the opportunity to divide the empire.

5. Geopolitics  European countries were attracted the Ottoman Empire because it had great ports and trade routes.  Taking control of these regions could make a lot of money for the European country.

6. Europeans Grab Territory  The Russians and the Ottomans had been fighting over control of the Black Sea for generations.  In 1853, the Crimean War breaks out –Russia vs. Ottomans, France, and Great Britain –Russia lost!! –Russia seeks revenge by helping local nationalists take their land back from the Ottoman Empire.

7. France and Britain want Egypt!!  The location of Egypt was very attractive to France and Britain. –It was located at the mouth of the Red Sea. –The construction of the Suez Canal made Egypt even more vital!!!

8. Persia Attempts to Modernize  Once oil is found in Persia, it is forced to modernize so that European countries will stay out!  Doesn’t work!!! Britain and Russia take control!!!
