The Filipino people were very angry at being denied their independence. In 1899, Emilio Aguinaldo led them in a rebellion against the U.S.

The war lasted for 3 years and in the end 20,000 Filipino and 4,000 U.S. soldiers were dead. However, the Philippine Islands will not achieve their independence until July 4 th 1946.

1903: the US began negotiating with Columbia to build a canal through the isthmus of Panama. When the negotiations failed the US sent naval ships to support Panama’s claim of independence from Columbia.

The US began construction of the Panama Canal in 1904. 1914: The Panama Canal opened after 10 years, $400 million dollars, and 5,600 dead workers.
