While stars from Snoop Dogg to Ava DuVernay shared the photos with their real hometown, memes soon sprung up, using the tool to spoof on everything from Shrek to Drake.”ShrekDrake Source: Entertainment Weekly “The Best Memes of 2015”

CLASS DISCUSSION- GLOBALIZATION AND MEMETICS Where did you hear about these different memes? Did you know where any of these memes originated?

VOCABULARY Globalization Memes Cultural artifacts

VOCABULARY Meme - an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture. The term was created by Richard Dawkins, an ethologist and evolutionary biologist, in 1976. Globalization -Globalization is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology. This process has effects on the environment, on culture, on political systems, on economic development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being in societies around the world. Cultural artifact – something created by humans that gives information about the culture of its creators and users. This terminology is used in the social sciences, particularly anthropology, linguistics, and sociology

CLASS DISCUSSION- GLOBALIZATION AND MEMETICS Why did you decide to study in the United States? How might globalization have impacted that decision? How were you exposed to elements of American culture via cultural artifacts before coming to the US?

CLASS DISCUSSION- GLOBALIZATION AND MEMETICS Globalization has had many positive impacts on our societies We have near-instantaneous communication between any points on the Earth Travel to anywhere on the planet usually takes less than 24 hours by plane Products and services not created or readily available in a given area can be quickly transported Information and knowledge are constantly being shared on the world wide web However, globalization has many negative sides as well: Trade disputes occur in areas where no country has authority, such as international waters Indigenous people and impoverished countries are often exploited for natural resources and labor Natural resources in common areas are often depleted, such as the overfishing of oceans Pests and diseases can be transported far from their place of origin, such as with the zika virus

CLASS ACTIVITY GLOBALIZATION In your groups, take a few minutes to talk amongst yourselves and figure out how many countries are represented in your group Generate a list of what countries are represented in your group and how they are represented

CLASS DISCUSSION- GLOBALIZATION If you came up with one country per student, you are wrong! Take a few more minutes to examine your clothes, phones, computers, purses, or any other personal belongings you have and determine where they were designed and made and add this information to your list of countries For example, iPhones are produced in China by Foxxcon, a company owned by Apple. They employ over 1.2 million workers there, and an average of 325 people are physically involved in the creation of a single iphone Source: The Week “What it Takes to Make an iPhone: By the Numbers”

CLASS DISCUSSION- REFLECTION What is reflection? What can we reflect on? What kind of questions do we ask ourselves when we reflect? What is the value of reflection?

CLASS DISCUSSION- REFLECTION Important questions for reflection: How did I feel about the experience? Why did I act/react/feel the way I did with this experience? What can I learn from the experience? How can I use what I have learned from this experience in the future?

HOMEWORK: Blog entry 2 Prompt: Reflect on how has globalization affected your life Now that you have a better understanding of globalization, take a few minutes to consider how it may have had a significant effect on your life. This could be related to far away cultures you experienced, impacts of media from other countries, goods and services you acquired from different places, or even what motivated you to study in the United States. You should consider the main questions for reflection: How did I feel about the experience? Why did I act/react/feel the way I did with this experience? What can I learn from the experience? How can I use what I have learned from this experience in the future?
