2 In this chapter you will learn  The difference between internal and external motivation  How to put adversity and failure into perspective  The impact of self-esteem on your values, motivation, and attitude.  Theories of motivation and learning  How to use your learning style, dominant intelligence, and personality type to increase your learning power.

4 Internal & External Motivation Internal-energy inside of you pushing you to go after what you want. External- external forces or people causing you to do something.

5 Convert External Motivation  Think of how you can benefit from the task.  Determine ways to make the task more relevant to you. Ex. Taking a history class as a math major. Driving a sibling back and forth to school.

7 Cornerstones of Personal & Professional Success  Develop a new attitude. -learned helplessness, pessimism vs. optimism  Make excellence a habit.  Overcome your doubts and fears.  Put adversity and failure into perspective.  Eliminate negative self-talk and the I can’t syndrome.

10 Calculating your G.P.A.  Each A is worth 4 points  Each B is worth 3 points  Each C is worth 2 points  Each D is worth 1 point  Each F is worth 0 points For each course, the number of points earned is multiplied by the number of credit hours carried by the course.

21 Sensing/ Intuition The way we learn and deal with information. Sensing- gather information through their five senses, cherish concrete facts and details. Intuitive- Not detailed oriented, they rely on gut feelings and are usually innovative.

22 Thinking/ Feeling The way we make decisions. Thinkers-usually logical people, analytical, can easily identify flaws, and can be seen as insensitive. Feeling- make decisions on what they feel is right, value other’s opinions and feelings, tactful, and aim to please others.
