What are 4 layers of bones? The outer surface is the Periousteum bone. It is a dense membrane that contains nerves and blood vessels. It is responsible for nourishing bones. The next layer is the Compact bone. This is the bone you see. It is the strongest layer of bone. Inside the compact bones there are many layer of Cancellous bones. They are a little bit softer and look like sponges. It is the 3 rd layer of bones.
