IT’S ALL ABOUT RHETORIC AP Language and Composition Ms. Amber Thompson

Let’s clear some things up… Rhetoric is all around us: Movies, art, body language, books, ads You know what it is, you just didn’t know the name. Its ordinariness will work in your favor. The more you read about it, the more you will recognize it in what you read (and write).

Aristotle  The Aristotelian Triad Aristotle believed that from the world around them, speakers could: Observe how communication happened Use that observation to develop sound arguments

The Five Canons of Rhetoric 1. Invention 2. Arrangement 3. Style 4. Memory 5. Delivery

What is rhetoric? OFFICIAL DEFINITION: the way people produce texts to create and communicate meaning

What is rhetoric? What is said (subject) Who is saying it (speaker) Who is listening (audience) Where/when it is being said (context/appeals) Why it is being said (purpose) How it is being said (tone, style)

Insert hand-drawn triangle here!

Speaker Ethos  speaker’s credibility Is the speaker trustworthy? gender/race/sexual orientation/political orientation/anything else that may influence the textin some way

Audience Pathos  appealing to audience’s emotions Uses own experience/judgment to react to the text Writing doesn’t exist in a vacuum; everyone brings something to the table

Subject Logos  persuasion by use of reason (aka you can back up your claims) Speaker knows what they’re talking about Try to see the main point as an argument: What is the author trying to convince the audience of? What does the author want to the reader to think/feel/do/say?

Context The situation in which reading/writing will occur Look for clues! Genre sometimes falls within the context bubble.

Purpose The emerging aim that underlies many of the writer’s decisions The WHY

Tone What is the author’s attitude about his/her subject? Typically positive or negative words What words/phrases helped you find the tone? Is the tone appropriate for the audience/subject at hand?

Style What strategies does the author employ to get his/her subject across? Let’s sign up for Rhetorical Strategies Projects!
