Imagine if you will, combining 275 pounds of cheese, 80 pounds of meat and nineteen 14 year olds? Well you get the picture. We developed a project called Raising Dough designed to assisted 14 middle school students raise money for their Washington DC trip. To really make this, a true entrepreneurial experience for the young students we decided to have them make the pizza’s they sold. This project made a profit and taught personal entrepreneurial skills in the process. The 4 main segments included: cost estimation, marketing, manufacturing and delivery. Our first task was to measure each ingredient to estimate the cost and determine the profit for each pizza based on a selling price of $10 per pizza. Next we demonstrated proper selling techniques and how to keep track of their money. Sales were great with 315 pizzas ordered. Next came the manufacturing. Our goal was to make the 315 pizza’s in under 2 hours at our projected cost. We gave the students instructions on proper health procedures such as hair-nets and gloves and how to make a “GOOD” pizza. Next with Our SIFE team serving as quality control we divided the students into three assembly lines, one each for pepperoni, beef and cheese and started to make pizza’s. Everything was going great until we noticed a lot cheese and pepperoni’s on the floor and tables so we stopped the assembly line and found that we had enough toppings on the table to make three pizza’s. We explained to the students about waste and how it can effect profit. We then started making pizza’s again and finished making 315 pizza’s in one hour and 40 minutes, Just in time for the super bowl. That’s one pizza every 19 seconds. The actual cost per pizza was $3.94. That was slightly higher than projected due to some extra waste and a price increase in cheese. The total profit earned by the students was $1908.00. This was their largest fundraiser and the students learned how to sell a product and manage funds but most importantly they learned how to organize a project work in teams and complete a project under a deadline.
