2 Two historical periods: Puritan Age Restoration Dominant poetic genre – elegy ( a sad and thoughtful poem lamenting the death of a person) Prosaic works: pamphlet ( a leaflet or paper-covered booklet containing information (often political) or treatise) treatise ( a formal article or book that deals with the facts, evidence and conclusions on a specific subject

3 Literary trends: metaphysical poetry - a highly intellectualized poetry marked by bold and ingenious conceits, incongruous imagery, complexity and subtlety of thought, frequent use of paradox, and often deliberate harshness or rigidity of expression neoclassicism - a literary movement during the latter part of the 17th century characterized by logic, order, wit and the emphasis of form over content

12 John Milton (1608-1674) cont’d Paradise Lost is an epic poem in blank verse The first version, published in 1667, consisted of ten books with over ten thousand lines of verse.
