These are some of the scale rules that you may find in the market. They may be flat, triangular or flipping types. They are used to measure lengths or distances from survey, architectural or engineering drawings or maps. The scales on these scale rules range from 1:1, 1:5, 1:10, 1:50, 1:100 and 1:200 to 1:1000, 1:1250 and 1:3000. For the purpose of measurement of building works, scale rule with scales 1:10, 1:20, 1:25, 1:50, 1:100, 1:200, 1:500, 1:1250 and 1:2500 would be suitable, 1:1 1:100 1 0mm 1 m 2 0 2 3 0 3 4 0 4 5 0 5 6 0 6 7 0 7 8 0 8 0 0 60 00mm 60 m 58 00 5 8 56 00 5 6 54 00 5 4 52 00 5 2 50 00 5 0 48 00 4 8 46 00 4 6 44 00 4 3 00mm 3 0m 290 2 9 280 2 8 270 2 7 260 2 6 250 2 5 240 2 4 230 2 3 220 2 210 2 1 200 2 0 190 1 9 1:20 1:200 200mm 2 m 400 4 600 6 800 8 10 00 1 0 0 0 12 00 1 2 14 00 1 4 16 00 1 6 18 00 1 8 20 00 2 0 22 00 2 0

If a cross-section of a timber is shown here with a scale 1:1, can you tell what is the cross- sectional size of the timber By taking the readings, we know that the size is 50mm x 100mm 1:1 1:100 1 0mm 1 m 2 0 2 3 0 3 4 0 4 5 0 5 6 0 6 7 0 7 8 0 8 0 0 60 00mm 60 m 58 00 5 8 56 00 5 6 54 00 5 4 52 00 5 2 50 00 5 0 48 00 4 8 46 00 4 6 44 00 4 TIMBER 50mm 100mm

If the scale of the drawing shown here is 1:100, what is the length of the wall at the bottom of the drawing. INTRODUCTION TO MEASUREMENT OF BUILDING WORKS Get the scale rule and set the edge with 1:100 scale against the wall to be measured and take the reading 5.80m 5.80m

The scale given for the drawing of this RC footing is 1:20 It is better to take the dimensions given in the drawing. But if they are not given on the drawing, you can use the scale rule to measure the size of the footing or the length of the reinforcement. 1.20m 0.45m 3 00mm 3 0m 290 2 9 280 2 8 270 2 7 260 2 6 250 2 5 240 2 4 230 2 3 220 2 210 2 1 200 2 0 190 1 9 1:20 1:200 200mm 2 m 400 4 600 6 800 8 10 00 1 0 0 0 12 00 1 2 14 00 1 4 16 00 1 6 18 00 1 8 20 00 2 0 22 00 2 0

26.00m Lot 2185 Kg. Temiang Ipoh This is an example of survey drawing with the scale of 1:250 By using a scale rule, you can find out the distance of the boundaries

Scale – 1:400 Site Layout You may use the scale rule that has 1:400 scale to measure the length of the soil pipes that runs from the house to the public sewer By using the scale rule it is found that the total length of the pipe is: = 18.00 = 9.50 = 9.00 = 36.50
