3
Why Was Jesus Baptized? Introduction: If the gospel requires baptism for salvation, we may wonder: Why was Jesus baptized? Why did Paul say, “Christ sent me not to baptize?” Why did Paul say we must leave “the doctrine of baptisms?”
4
Why Was Jesus Baptized? Introduction: The blood of Christ is the basis of salvation. “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” (Matthew 26:28)
5
Why Was Jesus Baptized? Introduction: Faith, repentance, and baptism are conditions we meet to receive the blood of Christ. (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15,16; Luke 24:46,47) The gospel proclaimed in the Great Commission includes these conditions.
6
M ATTHEW 28:18-20 “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.”
7
M ARK 16:15,16 “ And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
8
L UKE 24:46,47 “ Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”
9
Why Was Jesus Baptized? Introduction: Faith, repentance, and baptism are conditions we meet to receive the blood of Christ. (Acts 2:36-38) The gospel proclaimed in the first sermon on Pentecost includes three conditions.
10
A CTS 2:36-38 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Then Peter said to them, " Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Then he allowed Him.”
14
M ATTHEW 3:16,17 “ When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17
