Romans 6:1-14 SHALL WE CONTINUE IN SIN?

GRACE REIGNS VIA RIGHTEOUSNESS Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

CONTINUE LIVING IN SIN? 6 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Continue – Epimeno: tarry, continue, abide

BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

DEATH FREES FROM LAW Romans 7:3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man.

WE SHOULD WALK IN NEW LIFE Romans 6:4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

UNITED WITH CHRIST 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, together – symphytos:planted together (grafted); born together with

NO LONGER SLAVES OF SIN 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.

DEATH HAS NO DOMINION 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.

RECOGNIZE YOU’RE DEAD TO SIN-ALIVE TO GOD 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

NEW LIFE IN CHRIST “Augustine, great saint of God had lived with a prostitute before his conversion. After he was wonderfully saved, he was walking down the street and this prostitute saw him. She shouted his name and he kept walking. He saw her, but kept his eyes straightforward and walked. She continued crying after him and ran after him. And finally, she said, Augustine, it is I. To which he replied, I know, but it is no longer I.” –John McArthur

DO NOT LET SIN REIGN 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin,

UNDER GRACE NOT LAW …but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

PRINCIPLES TO APPLY Recognize that we are NOT slaves to sin. We are free from the power of sin. We are free to choose to present ourselves to God. We CAN walk in freedom and newness of life!
