2 What are feature articles? Feature articles are short, non-fictional pieces of informative or opinionative writing. Context: found in magazines (and newspapers) Designed to inform, persuade, argue, entertain. Written with a specific target audience in mind, depending on the type of magazine in which it is published. Age Gender Socio-economic background Interests Education Layout needs to be relevant to the topic and target audience, and attract the reader’s attention.

3 Structural features Catchy title, designed to get reader’s attention Graphics signalling type of article or topic and designed to get reader’s attention. Graphics can include: Photographs Maps Diagrams Brief paragraphs to suit skimming and casual reading Short topic sentences Organising devices such as subheadings, text boxes, etc Use of colour (consider connotations of colour choices) Text font

4 Language Features Use of inclusive pronouns to include reader or direct address to get reader’s attention Evidence (statistics, facts, quotations from experts, anecdotal evidence from author’s personal experience) Rhetorical questions Humour Use of present tense when discussing issues to indicate the issue is ongoing

5 Language Features cont. Vocabulary to suit topic and target audience. May include: Scientific or technical language Slang and/or swearing Sophisticated language Figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification) Hyperbole Repetition Sound devices such as rhyme, rhythm, alliteration and assonance

6 Informative Articles Purpose is to inform the reader about a place, activity, issue Choose a topic you already know about. It could be a hobby, a career, an activity, a holiday destination. This will ensure that you are comfortable explaining the topic and can be original. Make sure you plan your article first, so it is logical and easy to follow. You can use technical language, but depending on who your target audience is, you may need to explain any unfamiliar terminology Suggested topics: How to go on four-wheel drive holidays safely How to water-ski – a beginner’s guide Blogging for beginners School lunches for teenagers

7 Opinionative Articles Purpose is to give your opinion on a controversial topic. You can use persuasive techniques to encourage your reader to agree with you. In particular, use techniques such as evidence, rhetorical questions, and consider your use of language carefully. Begin with an introduction, develop three main points to support your point of view, and conclude on a strong note. Suggested topics: The new P Plate driver laws disadvantages country youth Binge drinking is rife in our community Athletes are poor role models

8 Other tips You have a limited word count of only 700 words, so be precise and to the point. You will have 300 words for your reflection. Total word count = 1000 words. Include photographs, diagrams, maps etc where relevant. Original photographs are better than ones from Google images. Aim for a 2-page layout. You can use either Word or Publisher to present your work. Consider your choice of title carefully.
