Program Oral Interpretation 10-minute limit/30 second grace period Cut from a published prose, poetry, or drama (plays) Must use at least 2 pieces from 2 separate genres Primary Focus: development of the theme or argument through the use of narrative, story, language, and/or characterization. Allowed to have a manuscript/Moderate movement Student written introduction/No props or costumes *This is a new event being piloted for 2016-17

Informative 10-minute limit/30 second grace period Your original writing and thoughts/Only 150 words of quotation Purpose: For the audience to gain understanding and/or knowledge of a topic. Subject: Provide info or perspectives on worthwhile topics Non-factual or personal references must be so identified Memorized/Minimal movement Use of audio/visual aids is ALLOWED *This is a new event being piloted for 2016-17

Debate 101 Congressional Debate 5 total seats per school/Can not participate in other IE’s Bill book will be compiled at the start of the season Dockets will be preset/Debaters will determine order to argue docket Students may have technology but cannot access the internet Lincoln-Douglas Debate Standard 6-3-7-3-4-6-3 format/One competitor Students may have technology but cannot access the internet Public Forum Debate Standard 4-4-3-4-4-3-2-2-3-2-2 format/Team of two Students may have technology but cannot access the internet Policy Debate Standard 8-3-8-3-83-83-5-5-5-5 format/Team of two Students may have technology but cannot access the internet

Basics Prepared/Memorized Pieces Step 1: Find a piece and cut it to the right time Step 2: Work on Character voices and stances Step 3: Write a 10-30 second introduction Step 4: Practice all pieces once daily Original Writing Step 1: Pick a topic: Current Event, Problems facing the world, Eulogize a person, Discuss an acceptable cause Step 2: Write an informative paper providing points and solutions\ NOTE: This is not a persuasive piece! Facts, solutions, and opinions only Extemporaneous Speaking Collect magazine and articles on current events and political news Keep up to date on news

Tournament Etiquette During Rounds Unless you are Cross Entered, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR ROUND Be a good audience member During Down Time Do not wander outside of the competition areas Keep the GHS area of the student lounge CLEAN During Awards For all awards other than 1 st and sweepstakes we follow the 1 clap rule All 1 st place and sweepstakes winners get a standing ovation

Ethics Speech and Debate has a strict code of Ethics, if you have an Ethics violation, I will disqualify you from the tournament and a discussion will be had if you will remain on my team. OO, Expos, POI, Poetry, Prose, Declamation, Duo, HI, DI – All require a Decency Clause signed by your coach and parent(s) DO NOT: Steal another teams’/persons’ cut piece, intro, or blocking Change your piece from the cut you have had approved Act inappropriately during the tournament Try to sell, buy, or steal another teams debate flow or case
