Photos today in all English classes. 10:59,11:45, 12:26 Objective: Students get truncated orientation and travel to get his/her class photo taken. DO: 1. Read Syllabus tonight-get signed. 2. Figure out how you will print a 4x6 selfie. 3. Find 4 personal and specific “favorites” that you can depict on back of name tag.

English 12: B day- Day 2 9/3 Objective : Students will learn elements that are important to writing memoirs, college letters and narratives: passion, tone, style, concision, precision. English 12- “A” day- day 3 9/4 Objective: Students will learn elements that are important to writing memoirs, college letters and narratives: passion, tone, style, concision, and precision. English 12: 9/10/15 A Day:#4 Objective: Students study 3 authentic models from Gil Scott-Heron in order to understand characteristics and stylistic devices critical to authentic writing. Tasks: Warm up # 2- A. Review Pieces of a (Very Young) Man -Diction, characteristics. B. View two songs-annotate. C. Harkness discussion notes and information. D. Go over format for discussion. E. Graded discussion.

English 12: 9/14 “B” Day # 4 Objective: Students will analyze college letter examples to determine authenticity Tasks today: 1. Warm up # 3 –photograph writing assignment. 2. Each table group is a university: A. Read each essay B. Annotate a little, name the essay. C. Accept or reject into your prestigious university. Homework? Yes. Read the rest of essays on line and annotate so your group can finish quickly on Wednesday.

English 12: 9/15/16-”A” & “B” Day Objective : Students will analyze college letter examples to determine authenticity. Tasks today: 1. Warm up # 4 –photograph writing assignment. 2. Finish: Evaluation of college letters: B. Discuss for individual points C. Turn in group work- be sure you review direction sheet so you get full credit. C. Accept or reject into your prestigious university. Use sticky notes. Put on the board. D. Assign first writing task. Memoir, personal essay, or college letter. See handout and rubric.

English 12- 9/17 “A” Day Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the “personal, informal, narrative or college writing essay by drafting, and determining a narrow focus. Task # 1 Complete brainstorming sheet. Task # 2 Draft- at least 300 words today. -Get stamped when finished. Task # 3 Work on a good hook. Get stamp for approved hook. Draft # 1 is due Monday.

English 12: 9/17/15 “A” Day Objective: Students demonstrate their understanding of the characteristics of an informal essay by writing a personal essay or college letter. Task 1: Complete brainstorming sheet. Task 2: Get Hook approved. Task 3: Draft 300 words. Task 4: Make a stamp sheet with labels. ** 3 stamps are available today. First draft due date: Monday, or Tuesday,9/21- 9/22. Bring 2 copies of a draft which is 500-750 words in length.

English 12 : “B” Day 9/22 Objective # 1 : Students will take notes on background information regarding the “Humans of New York”(HONY) project in order to proceed on their own “Humans of Liberty” project. Warm up # 5 : Follow directions of power point slide. Task 1: Take a photograph today or tomorrow that shows a complexity or contradiction and bring to class on Thursday.

English 12 part two- 9/22 Objective # 2 : Students complete a close reading on their rough draft of their informal essay. Task 1: Check diction: Need two highlighters. Active in one color, passive in another color. Task 2 : Check cliché’s: Circle cliché. Task 3 : Count how many stylistic devices the writer uses. Task 4: Get 2 stamps for rough draft copies. Task 5: Get 3 stamps for close reading activity.

Intro Task: Listen to “Unbound”-discuss subjects related to N.A. Issues. Task 1: Listen to Bill Moyer’s interview. Task 2: Read “Superman and Me” Task 3: Discuss Post-modernistic literature. Task 4: Read graphic organizer on modern literature. ** Keep diction, and subject annotation notes:

English 12 “ B” Day 9/24 Objective : Students need to review their close reading annotations on active and passive voice, cliché’s and style and revise their informal essay tonight. Task 1: If you need some help, come see me. The essay is due Tuesday. Senior business today. Pay attention and ask questions!

English 12 “B” Day 10/2/15 Objective : Students analyze “Superman and Me” in order to determine if this piece is an example of post-modernistic thinking. Warm up: Look at your topics list: what topic does your photograph characterize and why? A. write theme statements related to homework assignment. Task 1: Read “Superman and Me” Take Cornell notes. Discuss. Essay is on line. ** Keep Cornell notes. : A. complete analysis work sheet- Due at end of period. Task 3 : Listen to “Unbound”-discuss subjects related to N.A. Issues. Take notes. Task 1 Socratic discussion on “What You Pawn. Task 2 Analysis worksheets- staple together and turn in “Superman and Me” and “ What You Pawn” Task 3 Work on trail map for “ What You Pawn.”

English 12 “A” day- 10/7 Objective : Students learn how Alexie is dealing with Native American’s loss of identity and culture by tracing Jackson Jackson’s steps toward his culture’s regalia. Task 1: Warm up: listen to song and try to find connection to Alexie’s “What You Pawn, I shall Redeem.” Task 2: Socratic seminar on “What You Pawn…” 20 minutes. Task 3 : Finish map of Jackson Jackson’s journey.

Warm up # 4 : Listen to NPR interview with Alexie: What are at least 3 issues that he will address in his young adult novel. Task 1 : Listen and read along. - Track issues, post-modernistic topics( have your sheet handy!!) and rhetoric( how does Alexie control his voice. Task 2 : Finish Jackson Jackson journey map.

Essay will require you to bring in support from Alexie interview, “Superman and Me”, “What You Pawn, I will Redeem” Alexie NPR interview, and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Task # 2: Track issues, contemporary topics, and rhetoric. Task # 3 : Meet with Mr. Crowley to go over informal essay for initial evaluation. Future File: A. Next photograph is due Thursday. 1. English 12: “A” day &“B” Day- 10/19-10/20 Objective : Students learn background information on J.D. Salinger and characteristics of exposition of The Catcher in the Rye in order to understand contemporary motifs and patterns of the 1950’s. Warm up: Write on identity photograph- 50 words of concision. Turn in Alexie timed/quick write. Task 1: Salinger background. Task 2: Exposition of Catcher. Task 3: 2 pre-reading activities. Task 4: Read first few pages together.

English 12: Wednesday,10/21 Objective: Students will review their own self- assessment of their personality activity in order to be able to observe Holden with a bigger lens. Warm up # 1: see docu-camera. Task 1: Partner interview.- 7 personality questions. A. follow up discussion. Task 2: Read selected parts and discuss Salinger's style, tone and motifs. Students keep log. Task 3: Watch more of Salinger documentary. Take notes on background information regarding author. HW: CH 9 by Friday. Quiz.

English 12: “B” “A” Day- 10/23/26 Objective: Students will discuss exposition, Holden as a protagonist and narrator in order to understand Salinger’s initial purpose in character development. Task 1: Warm up # 7- Discuss protagonist and character development. Task 2: Review quote journal. Task 3: Group review activity for Chapters 1-9. Task 4: Quick reading quiz on first two reading sections. Ink please. ** Turn in HW from Thursday today on stool. Staple two HW’s together.

English 12: “B”Day- Tuesday, October 27 th. Objective : Students write an analysis of Trubek’s essay in order to evaluate her argument as it pertains to The Catcher in the Rye. Task 1 : Warm up # 8 Task 2 : Preview vocabulary Task 3 : Group think on Trubek’s argument Task 4 : Write an approved claim-HW due Thursday. Task 5 : Leveled discussion on chapters 10-13

English 12: “A” day-Thursday, October 30 Objective: Students analyze Anne Trubek’s essay challenging the notion that kids should be reading Catcher in HS. Task1: Complete warm up and briefly share. Task 2: 2o minute Debate on Trubek’s essay, evidence, effectiveness-participation points. Task 3: Check claims, and work on rough draft of analysis paragraphs Task 4: Discuss passages from chapter 16/17 and leveled questions. HW: Keep reading, turn in paragraph analysis with claim next Monday-typed.

English 12: Friday, 10/30 Objective: Students analyze Anne Trubek’s essay challenging the notion that kids should be reading Catcher in HS. Task1: Complete warm up and briefly share. Task 3: Go to Journalism Lab to write analysis of Trubek’s article with claim. Task 4: Write analysis of Catcher pages 121 and 133. A. One paragraph per scene: One quote per paragraph. Try to notice Holden’s change in thinking. HW: Keep reading, turn in paragraph analysis with claim and pages today or worst case next Tuesday- typed. Have a great Halloween!

English 12: Monday/Tuesday, 11/2-3/15 Objective: Students view more of Salinger documentary and look for parallels to the novel and their own reading experience. 2 nd quarter starts today. Warm up # 9: chapter 18-21 Respond to questions. -Self stamp leveled questions -Graded discussion. 1 tally D 2 tallies C 3 tallies B 4 tallies A Take a picture of a “Holden” between now and next week. Task 1: Watch Salinger documentary and take notes. Key- look for connections. Task 2: Turn in homework(3) on Trubek analysis. Staple together.

English 12: Wednesday/Thursday 11/4/5/15 Objective: Student’s will discuss chapters 21-23 plus the film in order to understand the shift in tone, and motifs regarding Holden’s character development. Task 1: Keep watching a bit more of Salinger documentary and add to your notes.(15) Task 2: Discuss in 3 small groups- 5 topics. -I will be walking around and grading your participation -Task 3: Finish book by Friday. -Task 4: Next photo due next Wednesday. Take a photo of someone who might resemble “Holden” Interview them and write 100 words.

English 12: Friday/ Monday- 11/6/15 and 11/9/15 Objective: Students analyze the novel’s end and also review key symbols that the novel offers to consider. Task 1 : Discuss for individual points CH 24,25,26. Task 2: Discuss the legacy of the novel. Task 3: Symbol making. Next class: Paper assigned and watch The Graduate. Warm ups are due and turn in level questions. Humans of Liberty assignment discussed on Thursday. Submit by Wednesday however.

English 12: Tuesday, 11/10/15 Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of Holden’s psychology by researching and writing a report about their discoveries of mental health issues. Task 1: Humans of Liberty revisited. Task 2: Introduce research paper on Holden. Task 3: Start watching The Graduate. Task 4: Take notes on parallels to themes found in Catcher. Exit ticket: Socratic discussion. **Turn in level questions and warmups if organized. -Friday will be last day to accept them.
