Professional Liability Insurance All students are required to purchase Professional Liability Insurance by the end of your first term. Information about where you can purchase this insurance can be found on Blackboard and on the next slide. You will be blocked from enrolling next term without insurance. Do not confuse this with mandatory Health Insurance required by the University. (Discussed later.)

Professional Liability Insurance Sources Professional Liability Insurance Sources (These are only suggestions and are not endorsed by the Program in Counseling. There are other acceptable providers.)

Blackboard https://courses.smu.edu/ All students will see Counseling Program as one of your courses. If you don’t have access to it, contact Jackie. There is a tab on the left-hand side of the page in the Counseling Program site entitled, “Student Insurance” Not all instructors use Blackboard, but check the Counseling Program section often for new information

Student Health Insurance All domestic students enrolled in 9 hours or more are required to be covered by health insurance – either your own coverage or coverage purchased through SMU. The only time a Counseling student can enroll in 9 hours is if they are taking an Inter-term course in addition to two regularly scheduled courses. (Inter-term courses are scheduled during the week following the end of a term.) For details, go to these Health Center links: http://www.smu.edu/StudentAffairs/HealthCenter/Insurance http://www.smu.edu/StudentAffairs/HealthCenter/Insurance/Domestic Student SEE NEXT 2 PAGES FOR MORE INFORMATION

Webmail Check your SMU email at least once a day. This is the only way we will communicate with you. https://webmail.smu.edu/ Use only your SMU email to communicate with SMU employees; otherwise, we may not receive it (junk, spam)

FINANCIAL AID You must enroll in and stay in 2 classes to be eligible for aid. Main campus contact is Charmissa Ajakaiye at ajakaiye@smu.edu; Email is the best way to reach her. You MUST use your SMU email account or your message may go to Junk Mail. ajakaiye@smu.edu You can find most information yourself by visiting http://smu.edu/Financial_Aid/ or http://www.smu.edu/EnrollmentServices/FinancialAid/TypesOf Aid/GraduateFinancialAid. (Remember, you are a graduate student in the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development.) http://smu.edu/Financial_Aid/ http://www.smu.edu/EnrollmentServices/FinancialAid/TypesOf Aid/GraduateFinancialAid The Counseling staff doesn’t handle financial aid so is unable to answer anything but very general questions. If you want to take only one summer class, put aside $ during the rest of the year to cover it. To be eligible for summer financial aid, you must take 2 classes in the 5-week summer term.

When you register for classes in my.SMU, there will be an option to view and/or order the textbooks for your class at the time you register. This allows you to charge your textbooks to your SMU account rather than a credit card. The text book list will be sent to all students via email prior to the start of each term and it is also posted on the Counseling website. www.smu.bncollege.com

Course Evaluations You will fill out a short evaluation (either online or in paper format, depending on the course) regarding the course and the instructor near the end of the term. Use constructive criticism if it’s warranted. Please be honest and specific. If you have a serious concern about a class or an instructor, this is not the venue in which to express that concern. You should talk to your advisor or someone who can help. A serious concern in an anonymous note cannot be addressed.

Course-needs Survey From time to time, we will send a survey to all students asking you to let us know which courses you intend to take the following term. This survey is for YOUR benefit so please respond. Please refer to our website www.smu.edu/mastercounseling to refer to the course schedule for the next term to determine which courses fit your schedule.www.smu.edu/mastercounseling Let us know which ONE or TWO courses you think you will take based on your schedule. (This is not a commitment on your part.) Our purpose is this: If 30 students tell us they all plan to take the same course, we will know to schedule more than one section. Let us know if you prefer day or evening. The existing schedule will likely not change but, if a second section is added, we will try to accommodate.

Faculty/Staff Mailboxes and Student Pick-up Boxes All full-time and adjunct faculty and the staff have mailboxes located on the wall in the Counseling office. You may use these to leave materials or messages for your instructors or the staff. There is a file cabinet next to the Canon copier in the Counseling reception area that is for use in returning materials to you, like papers or test results. They will be filed in hanging folders with your instructor’s name - sealed in envelopes with your name on the envelope. Your instructor will destroy any materials that haven’t picked up within a reasonable time.

The use of Facebook and other social media raises challenging ethical and clinical issues for both students and counselor educators. These include boundary issues: most importantly, the risks associated with a student’s private information being accessible to clients; issues related to enhancing the integrity of the profession; and the ethical responsibilities of counselor preparation programs in admitting and preparing students for counseling careers. In the age of technology, confidentiality can be more easily or inadvertently compromised. More common practices such as emailing with clients, use of voicemail, managing a professional website, or using Facebook or other social networking sites all have far-reaching implications and increased risk for breaching confidentiality. These practices are best limited with clear functions and parameters established with clients in advance of their use, if they cannot be avoided altogether. Even with the use of privacy options, counseling students may not be aware of the challenges of controlling access to their Facebook content. Privacy settings do not guarantee that information will remain private. For instance, when using the friend-of-a-friend level of privacy, it is possible that students have unknown common acquaintances with professors or clients; this might inadvertently give a client or faculty access to their information. Consequently, the unintentional dissemination of information remains a possibility and an ethical dilemma. Brew, L., Cervantes, J., & Shepard, D. Millennial Counselors and the Ethical Use of Facebook Volume 3, Issue 2, Pages 93–104 doi:10.15241/lbb.3.2.93 Article published online: October 2013
