NOUNS A noun names a PERSON, PLACE, THING, or IDEA There are several categories of nouns.

Collective Nouns A COLLECTIVE noun is a noun that names a group. EX: team, staff, faculty

Compound Nouns A compound noun is made up of two or more words. There are THREE types. A COMBINED word is when two words are put together as one. EX: birthday SEPARATE words are two words that are separate, but go together as a noun EX: New York HYPHENATED words are two words with a hyphen between them EX: eighty-two += HANDBOOK

Common Nouns A common noun names any one of a group of persons, places or things.

Proper Nouns A PROPER noun names a specific person, place or thing. EX: United States of America

Concrete Nouns A CONCRETE noun names a person, place or thing that can be perceived by one of the five senses. Ex: Dog You can TOUCH the dog, SMELL the dog and HEAR the dog.

Abstract Nouns An ABSTRACT noun names an idea, a feeling, a quality or a characteristic. Ex: Love, hate, beautiful, intelligent
