Journeys A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. -- Lao-tzu (604-531 B.C.E.)

People and animals sometimes set goals and take long journeys.

Imagine racing 1,151 miles in the cold wind and snow of Alaska from Anchorage to Nome.

The musher is the person who works the whole sled dog team through the lead dog.

The team of sled dogs follows the lead dog in the rugged Iditarod race.

The lead dog’s job is to help the team find the safest and fastest route without getting lost.

Mushers must have a special relationship with their dogs.

Not all journeys take place on land.

The Breitling Orbiter 3 began its journey around the world in Switzerland in 1999.

Circling the world in a hot air balloon was not an easy journey for Piccard and Jones.

Imagine the journey from a small village in Japan …

… to a new way of life in California, and then traveling back to Japan …

… only to have your village destroyed by a bomb.

Do you think it is possible to cross the Pacific Ocean on a raft?

It would be quite an adventure to take a journey on a bamboo raft.

Some people said the Titanic was unsinkable when it set sail in 1912.

But it hit an iceberg in the middle of the night and began to sink.

Lifeboats were used to save passengers from the sinking ship, but the Titanic didn’t have enough of them.

People in New York awaited the news of survivors.

After seventy-five years some of the wreckage of the Titanic was finally found.

Audubon’s desire was to travel the world to paint every bird in America.

Long ago people’s journeys across America took place by train.

Getting from here to there can be a difficult journey for a blind person.
