5. Do you know something about cloning ( 克隆 )? Man has created many things and now they are even ready to recreate themselves.

6. “Cloning” is a new biotechnology ( 生物技术 ) which aims to produce an exact copy of an animal or a plant from its own cells, DNA fragments ( 片段 ) or organisms ( 有 机体 ) in an asexual ( 无性繁殖的 ) way.

14. The kitten in the picture is called CC. Its name is from “Copycat”. It was born in December 2002.

15. The researchers in Texas produced CC with a cell taken from her mother Rainbow. CC was a healthy kitten who grew into a lively affectionate house cat. She is not the exact copy of her clone-mother because they grew up in different surroundings, though the shared the same genes.

16. These female pigs are also cloned. They were born on Christmas Day 2001. They were Noel, Angel, Star, Joy and Mary.

17. Although they are not the first cloned pigs, they are actually the first to be engineered in a way that their organs more suitable for transplantation into humans. Due to the shortage of human organs for transplants, many people are dying because some of their organs do not work. It is hoped that the organs from these pigs will be used in human’s bodies.

18. The name of the first cloned monkey is ANDi. It is from “inserted DNA” spelt backwards. The playful coffee- coloured monkey was born in 2000. The technology is different from that used for Dolly.

19. Researchers in Oregon, the USA created this first genetically modified monkey by putting a gene form a jellyfish, another species, into six-day-old monkey embryos ( 胚胎 ).

20. From the appearance, the cloned animals are exactly the same as the original ones. However, some cloned animals were reported to have health problems and died usually young.

21. The pair of calves were born on 5 July 1998 in Ishikawa, Japan. They were two years younger than Dolly, being second adult animal clones in the world. More examples about cloned animals

22. The mule in the picture is the world’s first cloned mule. It was born on 4 May 2003. His name is Idaho Gem.
