2. Checking In Books Each book has a Maxey School barcode on the front or back. The barcode gets scanned and checked in. Make sure that you look at the screen to assure the book is checked in. You should see the name of the book displayed on the screen. When you move on to another book, those previously checked in move into alphabetical order on the screen.

4. Checking Out Books When students are ready to check out books, they will come to the counter and tell you their last name (and their homeroom teacher’s name). You will have to spell it correctly to get to their account. For this reason, it is easiest to access the list by homeroom instead of patron. There is a pull down menu to find name of homeroom teacher. If you cannot understand them, or they don’t know how to spell their name, ask them again who their teacher is.. Students that have been in LPS for a time will have a picture pop up with their name, making it easier for you!! If a student already has too many books, the computer will not want you to check out more books. This may be due to students not getting things checked in prior to check out. Please ask students if they brought back books, how many, and you can take a peek in the drawer if this is confusing for them.

9. Where To Find/Shelve Books Books to be shelved are on carts: Nonfiction, Fiction, and in tubs: green and orange, matching where they go in the library Historical Fiction series are shelved by the windows close to courtyard as they have several authors and are easier for kids to find this way. Same for 39 Clues, Dog/Horse Diaries, STAR WARS, and other series.. (Look for those in Fiction) Questions?

10. Additional things to know... We monitor what students are looking up online, and what they are checking out.. Some examples: Students should only be looking up sites from the Library’s webpage unless working with a teacher or having permission to go to Google.. etc. Goosebumps books are for,4 th and 5 th graders. Many of the chapter books that are not “green sticker” are mature topics for the 4 th and 5 th graders. Any book with a hot pink spine label is for 4 th and 5 th only. Please ask me if unsure. We typically do not let students check out more than one brand new book, only one graphic novel, or more than one or two books from the same series (not 3 Fly Guy books, or 3 Geronimo Stilton at a time)

11. Additional things to know... If students need help finding a book, you can use the online catalogue to help them. Please help them use Chrome as their browser in the Library. If they ask for recommendations, it is helpful to know what they read recently that they enjoyed. This may give you ideas about the child’s interests in genre/topic, and their reading level. Feel free to have them read a page to you to assure that they have found a “good fit”. They should only miss up to three words on the page. If more or they struggle to read, it’s too challenging for now, they can try again later in the school year. By the same token, if it’s too easy, it’s probably a favorite from past years.. And they need to look for something more challenging.

13. Check out how many to who? Preschool-1 Board Book (2 typically starting at the 2 nd semester depending on the students) Kindergarten 1 orange sticker book (higher readers will get green after their teacher has assessed this, and we will know who this is), then will also get a “looking book” from anywhere else (after this is introduced, typically November). We want students to pick stories with lots of pictures, not long chapter books. Grade 1 2 just right books, and 1 looking book. The “just rights” are typically orange again, sometimes green..

14. Check out how many to who? 2 nd -5 th Graders can check out up to 5 books at a time. Grade 2 students will always have 5, with at least 4 being “just right”.. Gr. 3-5 will usually have 3 or 4. Basically all of their materials will be “just right”. If you have a question about if the book is a good fit, again, feel free to have the student read a bit to you. This will help them stay on track with selecting books that are appropriate. K-5 may have the option of checking out a magazine as one of their selections, with teacher permission. Please ask if unsure. Please encourage students to use shelf markers.
