2 Anotace: Anotace Didaktický učební materiál je určen pro žáky 3. ročníku maturitního oboru SOŠ. Materiál je určen k prezentaci a osvojení nového učiva. Inovuje výuku použitím interaktivní tabule. Otázky vedou žáky k nácviku samostatného projevu. Metodický pokyn Materiál lze využít k práci s textem – porozumění textu, rozšiřování slovní zásoby, samostatný projev v anglickém jazyce.

3 SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE A Scottish physician and writer Noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes A prolific author His other works include fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels

4 LIFE OF SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE Born in Edinburgh in 1859 Was sent to a Catholic school in the north of England Successfully completed his medical studies at the local University Worked as a general practitioner in Plymouth The lack of patients gave him time to write After moving to Southsea, he began to write more In 1891 he moved to London, soon gave up medical work to become a full-time writer He died in 1930, aged seventy-one

5 SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE´S WORK A Study in Scarlet, 1888 The Sign of Four, 1890 Short stories about Sherlock Holmes were published in the Strand magazine

6 SHERLOCK HOLMES A fictional character A genius in deduction and sharp observation No interest in women and no friends except Dr. Watson (presented as an ordinary man who often needs to have everything explained) Lives at 221B, Baker Street He wears a deerstalker hat, never forgets to have a smoke from his favourite pipe He starts playing the violin whenever he needs concentration

7 SHERLOCK HOLMES The books about Sherlock Holmes were extremely popular The author dreamt about becoming a more ´serious´ writer After the second series of stories he decided that the detective had to die The last story in this series, ´The Final Problem´ ends with Holmes in Switzerland where both he and his enemy Moriarty disappeared The public were shocked and angry In 1901 he decided to bring his character back to life

8 THE HOUND OF BASKERVILLES Originally published in The Strand Magazine in 1901 – 1902 It is set largely on Datmoor in Devon in England's West Country It tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel.”

9 AGATHA CHRISTIE A British writer, author of short stories, novels and plays She also wrote six romances under the name Mary Westmacott She wrote 66 detective novels and more than 15 short story collections under her own name The main characters of his books are Hercule Poirot, Miss Jane Marple and Tommy and Tuppence

10 AGATHA CHRISTIE´S LIFE Born in 1890 to a wealthy upper-middle-class family in Torquay, Devon She served in a hospital during the First world War In 1920 her novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles was published, based on her own nursing experience The character of Hercule Poirot appeared for the first time

11 AGATHA CHRISTIE´S WORK The best-selling novelist of all time Her books have been translated into at least 103 languages in the same year Many of her books and short stories have been filmed, adapted for television, radio, video games and comics Some of her books: The Thirteen Problems, 1927 And Then There Were None, 1939 Murder on the Orient Express, 1934 The Mousetrap, 1952

12 HERCULE POIROT A fictional Belgian detective An eccentric but likeable detective with the funny-looking moustache and egg-shaped eyes One of Christie's most famous characters Poirot has been portrayed on radio, on screen, films and television

13 MISS MARPLE A fictional character, one of the famous Christie´s detectives Miss Marple is an elderly spinster who lives in the village of St. Mary Mead She acts as an amateur detective She has been portrayed numerous times on screen
