1 Assessment in Primary Schools from September 2015

2 Summary of reforms  New assessments will reflect the more challenging national curriculum. Specifically :  introduce more challenging tests that will report a precise scaled score at the end of the key stages rather than a level  detailed performance descriptors directly linked to the content of the new curriculum

3 Reception  Baseline Assessment

4 KS1  –English reading  –English grammar, punctuation and spelling  –Mathematics

5 Key Changes  –English reading  2 papers:  –1 with text and questions combined  –1 more challenging text with the questions in a separate booklet  All pupils should be given the opportunity to sit both papers  Grammar, punctuation and spelling  Emphasis on technical aspects of grammar  Separate spelling test  No English writing test  Mathematics  New arithmetic test introduced

6 Key Changes KS1 English reading  Greater emphasis on comprehension elements of the new curriculum  Each test includes a selection of unrelated texts of increasing difficulty  A mixture of 2 text types  Paper 2 offered to all pupils

7 Key Changes SPAG  No contextualised questions  Written task has been removed  Spelling tested by asking pupils to complete sentences with a word missing

8 Key Changes Maths  New arithmetic test introduced  Some arithmetic test items have a grid in the answer / working out space  pupils may benefit from using more formal methods for calculations

9 KS2  –English reading  –English grammar, punctuation and spelling  –Mathematics

10 Key Changes  English reading  Greater focus on fictional texts  English grammar, punctuation and spelling  Greater focus on knowing and applying grammatical terminology with the full range of punctuation tested  Technical terms in grammar tested  Spelling patterns and methodologies form the basis of spellings tested

11 Key Changes  Mathematics  Mental mathematics test removed  Arithmetic test introduced to assess basic mathematical calculations  No contextualised questions  36 questions, 40 marks available, 30 minutes duration  Questions will cover:  –straightforward addition and subtraction  –more complex calculations with fractions  –long divisions and long multiplications

12 Key Changes English Reading  Retained a similar structure to the previous KS2 reading test  Greater emphasis on the comprehension elements of the new curriculum  Each test will have 3-4 unrelated texts of increasing difficulty  There will be a mixture of text types

13 Key Changes SPAG No contextual items Design of the test unchanged: –1 short answer paper with questions, 50 marks available –1 spelling test with questions, 20 marks available Spelling tested by asking pupils to complete sentences with a word missing

14 Key Changes Mathematics 3 papers: –1 arithmetic paper –2 mathematical reasoning papers Gridded paper provided in answer spaces for questions on the arithmetic paper and some questions on Paper 2

16 Changes  Year Group objectives  Prevent the gap  65% plus pupils at age expectation  New SAT test  Standardised Score – 100 (Age appropriate)

17 MAT

18 Assessment  Each half term pupils are assessed against objectives and a Graded Step is allocated.  A points score can be determined and an average score can be ascertained.

19 Data  On the whole, current criterion remains  Static  Towards  Expected (6 points required)  Exceeded

20  Pupils need to achieve, at least ‘B’ each year (6 points) to remain ‘on track’.  ‘C’ Step will require intervention to ‘close the gap’. (6 points is not enough for a ‘C’ Step pupil)  ‘A’ is a high achieving pupil. All pupils to achieve ‘A’ where possible – aspiration. 6 points
