Types of Words  Content words include nouns, verbs, and adjectives and carry meaning (such as sky, run, and large).  Function words are not meaningful by themselves, but give structure to language (such as to, in, and of).  Academic words are related to school tasks and settings (such as combine, define, study, and memorize).
