 What are examples of units of Measurement? ◦ Inch, foot, centimeter, degree, tablespoon, cup, miles, etc.  Why are they important? ◦ Measurements are all around us. They provide standards and stability to every day life.

 What does this mean? ◦ Accuracy is how close to “true” measurements are.  Why is it important? ◦ Accuracy is important because the exactness of the measurements affects the product and results of the experiment or project you are working on.  Ex: Installing a carpet. If you measure the carpet and floor incorrectly you will end up with either too little or too much of the carpet.

 1. Know the starting unit and conversion unit.  2. Find out the equivalence ratio.  3. Set up a ratio.  4. Complete the equation by:  Setting the different units equal to each other  Using the variable X to represent what u are trying to solve  Cross multiply  Solve for X and use labels.

 Ex: 12 tsp = ____cups?  1. Decide what you are starting with: tsp  Decide what you are converting to: cups  2.Use the chart to determine the ratio between the two : 1 tsp = 1/48 cup

 3. Set up a ratio:  4.Complete the equation. ◦ A. Set them Equal ◦ B. Use X to represent what you are solving for ◦ C. Cross multiply ◦ D. Solve for X; use labels

 1. Choose the correct formula for the shape and what you’re trying to find.  2. Plug the known values into the equation and solve for the unknown variable.  3.Use correct units:  Perimeter uses just the unit Ex: cm, m, ft, mi  Area uses the unit squared Ex: cm^2, m^2  Volume uses the unit cubed Ex: cm^3

 The mayor is buying tile for his rectangular bedroom. The room is 12 feet long and 5 ft wide. How much area will have to be covered in order for the mayor to cover the entire floor?  Area of a rectangle is A=L*W  A=12*5  A= 60 ft^2
