2 THE SENTENCE A SENTENCE IS A GROUP OF WORDS THAT EXPRESSES A COMPLETE THOUGHT. MUST HAVE TWO PARTS: SUBJECT AND THE VERB

3 THE SUBJECT THE SUBJECT IN A SENTENCE NAMES A PERSON, PLACE, OR THING THAT IS PERFORMING OR RECEIVING THE MAIN ACTION IN THE SENTENCE. THE ACTION PERFORMED OR RECEIVED CAN BE A PHYSICAL ACTION OR STATE OF BEING ACTION.

4 PHYSICAL ACTION PERFORMING ACTION: Juan threw the ball to Jonathan. RECEIVING ACTION: The ball was thrown to Jonathan by Juan.

5 STATE OF BEING ACTION STATE OF BEING PERFORMING ACTION: You are happy today. Laura is one of our students. She seems to be happy.

6 THE UNDERSTOOD SUBJECT In sentences that gives a command or makes a request (IMPERATIVE), The subject is always understood to be (YOU) most of times. The word you does not appear because is understood when one person is speaking directly to another.

7 EXAMPLE Please, give me that notebook. (The sentence makes a request. The subject is understood to be you.) Write a paragraph about the nature. (The sentence gives a command. (The subject is understood to be you.)

8 MAIN SUBJECT If the subject of a sentence names the person, place, or thing that is performing or receiving the main action in the sentence, we call it the main subject.

9 EXAMPLE The new pretty tall girl comes from other school. The main subject is girl. The words The new pretty tall are modifiers, they are not part of the main subject.

10 THE VERB – THE ACTION WORD The verb is a word that tells what the subject does, what the subject is or what happens to the subject.

11 WHAT THE SUBJECT DOES My neighbor walks his dog every evening. The verb walks tells what the neighbor does.

12 WHAT THE SUBJECT IS Rosa del Valle is our School Director. The verb is tells what Rosa del Valle is.

13 WHAT THE SUBJECT IS: STATE OF BEING CONDITION Modesto is very happy today. The verb is tells about Modesto’s state of being condition.

14 WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SUBJECT The city manager was given a 3 percent raise in salary. The verb was given tells what happened to the city manager. (Note that the verb has two words.)

15 THE MAIN VERB The main verb is the most important verb that expresses the action. When the verb has more than one word in it, the main verb is always the last.

16 Lizmarie sent her homework with Florieliz. There is only one verb-sent. It is, of course, the main verb. Lisandra had been collecting the money for two months. The main verb is the last verb, collecting. The other verbs, had and been, are helpers or auxiliary verbs.

17 THE COMPOUND SUBJECT A subject is compound when it has two or more parts that are joined by a conjunction (and, or, or nor). These parts have the same verb. When two or more nouns or pronouns are joined by and, the verb is always plural.

18 EXAMPLE I The boys and the girls hit the pinata. The nouns boys and girls form the compound subject. The two parts of this compound subject are plural; they are joined by the conjunction and. They require the plural verb, hit.

19 EXAMPLE II The boy and the girl hit the pinata. The nouns boy and girl form the compound subject. Both nouns in this compound subject are singular, but they require a plural verb because they are joined by the conjunction and The plural verb is hit.

20 TIPS When two or more nouns or pronouns are joined by or, nor, either…or, or neither…nor, the noun or pronoun closest to the verb determines whether the verb is singular or plural.

21 The boys or the girls hit the pinata. The nouns boys and girls are joined by or to form the compound subject. Look at the noun closest to the verb. Girls is plural; therefore, the verb must also be plural. Hit is also plural.

22 The boys or the girl hits the pinata. The nouns boys and girl are joined by or to form the compound subject Look at the noun closest to the verb, girl is singular Therefore, the verb must also be singular, Hits is singular

23 THE COMPOUND VERB Consists of two or more verbs that are joined by a conjunction(and, or, nor). The verbs have the same subject.

24 You can sing or dance in the variety show. The words sing and dance form the compound verb They have the same subject. (You)

25 The sales associate plans and promotes special events. The words plans and promotes form the compound verb They have the same subject, (associate)

26 EXERCISE:Underline the compound subjects in the following sentences 1. A circus wagon or a float is used in the parade. 2. The sheriff and prisioner enter the courtroom. 3. Papers and pencils are necessary to take the qualifying exam. 4. Neither the brother nor the sister wants the prize. 5. Men and women are needed as volunteers for the Red Cross.

27 EXERCISE: Underline the correct verb in the following sentences 1.Charlene or Lee(supervises, supervise) the installation of the computers. 2.A computer or books(are,is) needed for the auction. 3.Books or a computer(is, are) needed for the auction. 4.The president or vice president(is, are) coming to our open house. 5.The students and the teacher(plan, plans) to review the syllabus.
