Liberal Studies (1) Does globalization make people travel around the world?
2
Describe the trend as reflected in Source 1. According to Source 1, the number of global tourist arrivals has been rising continuously since 1950. By 2006, the number had increased more than 30 times. Since the 1970s, the rate of increase of global tourist arrivals had accelerated. The rate was especially high after 1990. (3 marks)

According to Source 2, identify the relationship between migration and globalization. Explain with the example of the character in the source. The advancement in information technology increases people’s understanding of other places and their desire to settle in foreign countries. For example, the Canadian in the source wanted to come to Hong Kong because he had watched programmes introducing Hong Kong. Moreover, the advancement in transportation technology enables people to travel across different places more easily and quickly, making migration easy. In addition, the Canadian in the source brings souvenirs from Hong Kong to his friends in his hometown, and also brings Canadian specialties to his friends in Hong Kong. This shows migration can facilitate cultural exchanges between the migrants’ hometown and their place of settlement, thus intensifying the trend of globalization. (5 marks)

Referring to the sources and based on your knowledge, explain how globalization improves the quality of life of people in different places. Free answers. Any reasonable answers are acceptable. For example: Globalization stimulates the tourism industry, the retail industry, the hotel industry, and related industries. It improves the economies of many countries. Moreover, travelling and migration can both broaden people’s horizons and satisfy their psychological needs. This improves people’s non-material quality of life. In addition, people generally would have a higher level of tolerance as they are used to getting along with people of different nationalities and from different backgrounds. This can make the society stable and harmonious, and therefore improve the quality of the society and politics. (5 marks)

How does globalization add to the multiplicities of identities of Hong Kong residents? Free answers. Any reasonable answers are acceptable. For example: Migration has become popular under globalization, which enables more Hong Kong people to migrate to other countries and foreigners to settle in Hong Kong. This brings in more people of different nationalities, from different cultural backgrounds and with different habits to Hong Kong’s society, thus increasing the multiplicities of identities of Hong Kong residents. ‘Globalization accelerates the consumption of energy.’ Discuss this statement. Free answers. Any reasonable answers are acceptable. For example: Under globalization, the number of tourist arrivals continues to rise. Cross-boundary economic activities also contribute to an increasing demand for transportation. At present, the major fuels for transportation are non- renewable energy sources. In other words, they will be exhausted one day. Unless we are doing research and development on renewable energy and promoting the use of renewable energy, energy will be exhausted more quickly with the increasing usage of transportation.
