Sgraffito Objective: You will analyze artworks and define sgraffito in order to create a design and apply the sgraffito technique to your slab dish. DRILL: 1. What is sgraffito? How is it done? 2. What are some other things to draw besides designs? 3. What are some other creative options for your sgraffito piece? 4. Take 5 minutes to work on your designs. If finished, draw another plan to have options.

Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch") is a decorating technique produced by applying layers underglazes or colored slips to leather hard pottery then scratching off glaze or slip to create contrasting images, patterns and texture and reveal the clay color underneath.

Sgraffito Steps: 1. Make clay piece. 2. Paint black glaze or red slip onto leatherhard clay. 3. Draw on clay. 4. Paint with clear shiny glaze.

Leather Hard How can you get your clay leather hard? 1. If bone dry~ Make a new piece. 2. Leave in bag overnight with damp newspaper. 3. Work on bone dry clay and risk breakage??? Prob not a great idea, but it works.

List the steps for sgrafitto: (TWO STEPS FROM YESTERDAY-ALREADY DONE?) 2. What tool do you use? 3. What are you drawing on your dish? Designs? 4. What do you think the criteria for this should be?

Use red slip for sgrafitto if the black is too hard to see. 5. Next 1-2 classes- sgrafitto or glaze pencil detail paint skulls or animals inspired by Oaxacan wood carvings.

Sgraffito Criteria: 1. Sgraffito technique 2. Use designs as inspired by Mata Ortiz pottery. 3. Slab slump dish. 4. Detail/ difficulty/ craftsmanship 5. Be creative and original.

Design Refresh Objective: You will compare designs and analyze art in order to recreate successful designs for sgraffito.. DRILL: 1. Turn in your sketchbook to page from Friday/ Mata Ortiz. 2. If you have at least 6 designs drawn on your brainstorm- you may work. 3. People are struggling with designs. 4. Miss Gauger is going to demonstrate successful designs for you to follow along. Get a design folder/ an iPad.

In your design- Draw a minimum of 5 bands of designs. This will be for your sgraffito piece.

Draw a design inspired by Mata Ortiz: 1. Draw the shape of the clay. 2. Create bands by drawing lines. 3. Draw line and shape patterns in the bands. 4. Use repetition. 5. LOOK AT DESIGN FOLDERS IN BINS. (Retro Art, Designs, and Line/ Shape folders ) Objective: You will analyze Mata Ortiz pottery in order to apply similar techniques to create your own design.
