“Don’t be afraid!” Gospel of John 14,16-31 ICEL 18 September 2016

ICEL John 14:16-31 (New International Version) 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.

ICEL John 14:16-31 (New International Version) 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”

ICEL John 14:16-31 (New International Version) 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me. 25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.

ICEL John 14:16-31 (New International Version) 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

ICEL John 14:16-31 (New International Version) 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. 28 "You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. (John 14:27-29 NIV )

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not let them be afraid. 28 "You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 10 1.What would trouble the disciples hearts? Why would they be afraid? 2.How did the world give peace in Jesus’ day? 3.What makes the peace that Jesus gives different? 4.What fears do we have? How can the peace Jesus offers overcome them?

Jesus is leaving them In these four chapters of the Gospel of John he tells them at least ten times that he is going away: “I am going to prepare a place for you” “I am going away” “In a little while you will see me no more”

They are afraid of the Jews “His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.” (John 9,21-22, see 7,13 and 20, 19)

Pax Romana

Peace as absence of conflict, public order Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. (Acts 9,31 )

Peace through reason or philosophy Epictetus (Greek Stoic philosopher, 1 st century): “this peace proclaimed by God by means of reason (logos)”

1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity. (Proverbs 3, 1-2) “Hillel said: ‘Be among the disciples of Aaron who love peace; pursue peace, love creatures and lead them to the Torah’.” (Rabbi from turn of century when Jesus is born)

What makes the peace from Jesus different? 1.Depends on a relationship with him 2.Includes love for him and others 3.Means following his teachings 4.With the Holy Spirit

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (John 20,19-22)

“My peace I leave you, I give you my peace” 1.Become a friend of Jesus 2.Receive the Holy Spirit 3.Recall and follow his teachings
