Website Calendar 1.Click on any link. 2.This will open the “event”. 3.Download any worksheets handed out or discussed in class. Be happy!

In the Science Classroom  Daily Agenda-  Google Slides up at the beginning of class  Gone over before we begin the tasks  Will also linked on my website In Class

In the Science Classroom  Other Key Features of the Science Class:  Absent work area  Bin to store lab notebooks. In Class

Content of Life Science Curriculum  Trimester one:  Safety  Scientific Method  Pilot Curriculum (see district letter)  Trimester two:  Only One Ocean  Our Genes, Our Selves  Trimester three:  Our Genes, Our Selves  Evolution  Ecology  Forestry Curriculum

Life Science Curriculum  Inquiry Based Curriculum  Uses all modes of instruction  direct instruction, group work, and individual work.  Asks students to move from concrete thinking to more abstract thinking.  Not just memorizing facts  Builds all skills needed for successful scientific exploration.  SAFETY a big focus in 6 th grade science Curriculum

Inquiry Based Curriculum  Lab Investigations run the curriculum  Hands on activities  Group work  Readings on current issues  Will use lab equipment and tools regularly Curriculum

Grades  Weighted  One project per trimester  “ Skills ” are the things scientists need to do to be successful and include;  Lesson Assignments  Lab Write-Ups  Homework  Notebook  Science Readings  Grades will be posted on Family and Student Access when all classes have been graded.  Late Work…updated when I can.  Receives FULL credit when turned in  * in grade means “not graded yet”…does still show up in “missing” bucket. Tests/Quizzes/ProjectsSkills 0%40% Policies

End of Year Grades  Your child will receive TWO grades from me.  Achievement:  All the ACADEMIC grades  Non-Achievement:  All the BEHAVIOR aspects of being a student. (WICC)  Work Ethic  Initiative  Collaboration  Citizenship Policies

Non-Achievement  Work Ethic Policies

Late Work  I know that occasionally students forget to do their work or get busy (don’t we?) so homework may not get done.  Why penalize their GRADE for things that might be out of their control?  Late work will be accepted until the next assessment (quiz or test) for FULL credit  Encourage QUICK turn around.  Their NON-Achievement grade will reflect these behaviors. Policies

Non-Achievement  Initiative Policies

Homework/Classwork  If they do not finish class work—it becomes homework!  There may be Friday homework, but we try not to give homework over the weekend.  Most work will be put into Lab Journals that are housed in class  If your child is confused, needs help, needs to make up work…have them come to cocoa club; Wednesday before school, 9:30 am (cancelled tomorrow!)  If absent, they WILL have work to make up.  Can also pop in after arrival in the morning before 7:40 Policies

Non-Achievement  Collaboration Policies

Non-Achievement  Citizenship Policies

Missed Days  Students must make up all work due to absences. Try to make all appointments not during science class…  Students receive one day per day absent to make up the work.  Because we correct in class, they may need to correct their work on their own, at home, off my website.  Labs must be made up at the next cocoa club day.  All homework is recorded on my website nightly (usually a week at a time). Policies

Strategies for Success  Check your child’s planner and my website regularly  Help your children keep their backpacks and binders organized and replenish supplies as needed.  Regular attendance is essential. If they must be absent, support your child in making up missed work in a timely fashion (and help them get to cocoa club).

Communication  Please don’t hesitate to email: jaegerk@issaquah.wednet.edu jaegerk@issaquah.wednet.edu  Please don’t call during school hours 425-837-5982  Start having your child initiate communications and take responsibility for their learning.

Thank you  This presentation is available for viewing on my website.  Have a wonderful evening
