Accelerating the Energy Transition through standardized open-source smart flexibility solutions Flexiblepower Alliance Network aims at a renewable energy future by promoting a smart energy system with: Smart demand flexibility to match swings of renewable energy; Open-source communication standards for smart flexible energy; A transactive energy market solution, matching renewable supply and smart flexible demand. Flexiblepower Alliance Network (FAN)
2
The renewable energy system will need a new way of matching demand &supply Now: fossil-fuel power is the basis, following demand variations Future: less and less power plants; intermittent renewable to become the basis – Without fossil fuel power plants: how will we match the variations of both the demand and the renewable supply? Storage, demand shifting and flexibility are needed! So we need a smart energy system: A new decentralized energy system, with autonomous balance between intermittent renewable supply and demand variations / flexibility Am open standard for accessing and communicating with flexible demand appliances, without licensing cost and independent on providers Portability and interoperability: Consumers can swith between suppliers with their flexible devices without adaptation of communication interfaces 2
3
What we did so far 1.We initiated an independent ‘open’ protocol (EFI) standard to communicate with all Demand Response Management systems 2.Providing Open Source software (EF-Pi) to connect all drivers of different brands and functionalities 3.Develop an Open Source Demand Response System (Powermatcher) Flexiblepower Alliance Network (FAN)

Currently: many ways to communicate between various smart devices and many Demand Side Management steering solutions Energy Flexibility Interface provides one common language for energy flexibility. Allows all Smart Appliances to communicate with all Demand Side Management solutions Portability of customer Flex between (switching of) suppliers / providers / aggregators EFI Supplier’s or Aggregators demand response system Disadvantages: Costly and Complex Propriety solutions Switching is difficult Customer lock-in Easy switching No Lock-in International Certification Process: -FAN joined CENELEC working group CLC/TC 205/WG18, Home and Building Electronics Systems -EFI principles are in high level architecture (CENELEC EN 50491-12-1 ), now in voting -EFI details to be proposed for 2nd guideline (CENELEC EN 50491-12-1 ), in drafting Cost-effective Open Source

PowerMatcher is a highly scalable Demand Side Management technology PowerMatcher uses “Transactive Energy” to tell smart devices when to consume or produce electricity, in order to integrate more renewable energy in our power grid Encourage consumption Discourage consumption EFI messages EFI messages EFI

Smart algorithms and interfaces do not automatically result in reliable services. EF-Pi is an Open Source EFI-based reference implementation of a software platform designed to facilitate Smart Grid interfaces and algorithms. EF-Pi Incl. Bluetooth to EFI adapter etc. Bluetooth EFI over Internet EF-Pi provides: -A platform for Smart Grid interface and algorithm developers -An easy way to connect smart devices with Demand Side Management solutions -A user interface for the end user which allows them to monitor and control their own devices -Scalability -Remote management -A way to easily update software -Monitoring energy and performance UTP Wifi
