PARISH: A certain (= clearly defined) community of the Christian faithful stably constituted in a particular church (= diocese), whose pastoral care is entrusted to a pastor (parochus) as its proper pastor (pastor) under the authority of the diocesan bishop. Remember: parish = people

MERGING: a transitional step A process by which one parish is subsumed into another. After two or more parishes merge, they either will be a new stand-alone parish or a new partnered parish.
