PHOENICS Today PHOENICS 2008 February Computer Simulation of Fluid Flow, Heat Flow, Chemical Reactions and Stress in Solids.
2
PHOENICS Today Contents This presentation shows some of the new features in PHOENICS 2008 The talk is in five parts: –Pre-processor (VR-Editor) –Post-processor (VR-Viewer) –Solver (Earth) –General improvements (common to all modules) –Highlights of earlier improvements
3
PHOENICS Today Possibility to show thumbnails of geometry files VR Editor Improvements
4
PHOENICS Today Possibility to show thumbnails of geometry files VR Editor Improvements
5
PHOENICS Today Save as a case and Open existing case save and restore intermediate step/sweep files. As these files can be very big, this step is optional. A dialog will display the required disk space or warn that there is not enough room for the operation. VR Editor Improvements
6
PHOENICS Today In Flair/HOTBOX the file holding the fan characteristics curves can be edited directly from within the interface (Main Menu – Models). In Flair/HOTBOX the list of fans present in the fan data file is presented as a selectable list for each FAN object. VR Editor Improvements
7
PHOENICS Today In Flair the Fire and Smoke dialogs have been updated to use terminology from the standards documents. VR Editor Improvements
8
PHOENICS Today In Flair there are now two sight-length variables, –for weakly-reflective and –light-emitting objects. The default constants are set for these conditions, and the help file/User manual give more details of how they are obtained. VR Editor Improvements
9
PHOENICS Today In transient cases, the POINT_HISTORY object can select which variable(s) to create time history information for. All SOLVEd and STOREd variables can be handled. VR Editor Improvements
10
PHOENICS Today Earth Improvements When PARSOL and GENTRA are active together, the particles will bounce from the true facetted surface of the object. Previous version

12
PHOENICS Today Parallel PHOENICS has been amended to enable it to work satisfactorily with moving objects using MOFOR. Earth Improvements
13
PHOENICS Today The calculation of forces and moments on blockages has been extended to non-facetted objects which use cube***.dat as a geometry file. The calculation of forces and moments is correct for cylindrical-polar coordinates. Earth Improvements
14
PHOENICS Today The time-history plots in RESULT can now extend to 99999 steps. Previously there was a limit of 9999 steps. The built-in interfaces to TECPLOT and FIELDVIEW have been extended to BFC multi-block. Earth Improvements
15
PHOENICS Today Thin curved objects can be implemented by using solids with material 299. Surfaces which align with the grid, and un-cut cells are ignored. Cut cells have their areas and volumes set to zero, thus preventing flow. Earth Improvements

30
PHOENICS Today The data for the plot is also output to a text file which can be easily imported to Excel. The output format for dumped profile, and surface data has been changed to make it more readily compatible with Excel. Similarly for time histories dumped from the POINT_HISTORY object. VR Viewer Improvements
31
PHOENICS Today 'Show Results' for an object scans through RESULT for the data relating to the time-step (or sweep) currently being plotted. VR Viewer Improvements

40
PHOENICS Today Improved control of lighting for the scene –-X General Improvements
41
PHOENICS Today General Improvements There are now separate increments in each coordinate direction for moving the probe or sizing objects.
42
PHOENICS Today 64-bit Windows version of PHOENICS is available It does not suffer from the memory limitations of the 32-bit versions Preliminary tests seem to show that performance is very similar, however many bits there are! General Improvements
43
PHOENICS Today New option for rotating co-ordinates. Previously, the entire domain had to rotate. Stationary walls were given a negative velocity. Could not be used with rotor-stator arrangement, as could not represent stationary part. New Feature
44
PHOENICS Today New object type ROTOR introduces zone of rotating co-ordinate within static domain. All cells within the rotor object are shifted in X relative to the static domain at the start of each time step. Only one object-detection sequence is needed, as everything within the rotor goes round with it. New Feature
45
PHOENICS Today New object type ROTOR introduces zone of rotating co-ordinate within static domain. New Feature
46
PHOENICS Today Time step size and number of steps are automatically set from the input parameters. In this release only one ROTOR object is allowed, but this restriction will be removed if the option proves popular. New Feature
47
PHOENICS Today New Feature First example shows a row of simplified blades pulled between two simplified stators.
48
PHOENICS Today New Feature Second example shows flow induced by a rotating propeller
49
PHOENICS Today Previous highlights Here follow some improvements made in previous release(s) which are worth mentioning again, in case they have been missed.
50
PHOENICS Today An auto meshing feature has been added. For most cases the Editor will generate a reasonable grid with little or no user input. The grid distribution is based on a maximum cell size (as a fraction of the domain size), and a maximum change in cell size across region boundaries. VR Editor Improvements
51
PHOENICS Today The default grid can then be easily refined VR Editor Improvements
52
PHOENICS Today The treatment of Polar geometries has been significantly updated. As a reminder, in polar co-ordinates –X is θ, the angle (in radians!) –Y is r, the radius –Z is z, the axial distance. VR Editor Improvements
53
PHOENICS Today For objects using the default 'polcu' geometries, the size is set in (dθ,dr,dz) and position in (θ,r,z) as before. For non-'polcu' geometries, including STL imports, the size is in Cartesian (dx,dy,dz), but position is still in (θ,r,z). VR Editor Improvements
54
PHOENICS Today As the Cartesian size is used, the shape and size of the object are preserved with no distortion. VR Editor Improvements
55
PHOENICS Today This allows us to use more suitable grids… VR Editor Improvements
56
PHOENICS Today The treatment of INLET objects in Polar co-ordinates has been improved. The inflow can now be specified as: –Cartesian velocity components –Polar (grid-directed) velocity components –Volumetric flow rate –Mass flow rate VR Editor Improvements
57
PHOENICS Today VR Editor Improvements
58
PHOENICS Today VR Editor Improvements The 'Slide velocity' can be set for blockages as well as for plates. By setting the surface velocity, a range of cases involving steady movement can be treated as steady-state.
59
PHOENICS Today VR Editor Improvements In Cartesian co-ordinates, the 'Spin' option sets the surface velocity as if the object were rotating about its axis.
60
PHOENICS Today VR Editor Improvements In Polar co-ordinates, the slide velocity can be in m/s or radians/s.
61
PHOENICS Today A new object type TRANSFER has been introduced. It allows the outflow from one solution to be used as the inflow to another. VR Editor Improvements
62
PHOENICS Today INLET and OUTLET objects can also be ‘tagged’ to act as Import or Export TRANSFER objects Only the shape of the Import/Export object needs to be the same between runs – the grid does not need to be identical The data to be transferred is held in an ASCII text file VR Editor Improvements
63
PHOENICS Today The new object types ANGLED-IN and ANGLED-OUT have been introduced. These allow inlets and outlets of any arbitrary shape to be placed on the outer surface of any arbitrarily-shaped blockage. The area of action is the area of intersection between the object and any blockage. VR Editor Improvements
64
PHOENICS Today VR Editor Improvements
65
PHOENICS Today When PARSOL is active in Polar co- ordinates, the contours and vectors in the cut cells are displayed correctly. VR Viewer Improvements
66
PHOENICS Today For buoyancy-driven flows, the effect of buoyancy on turbulence can be significant. In stably-stratified flows, such as smoke layers, turbulence can be damped. Conversely, in the vicinity of plumes, the turbulence can be enhanced. These effects are implemented in the K- ε models via an additional source term. Earth Improvements
67
PHOENICS Today The choice between stable or unstable stratification was previously made by setting a constant to 0.0 or 1.0, and so could never be universally correct. An 'auto' function has been introduced which switches between the stable and unstable forms depending on the local flow direction. This should produce better results for cases with zones of both stable and unstable stratification. Earth Improvements
68
PHOENICS Today Geometry of standard room fire test –62.9MW steady fire Earth Improvements
69
PHOENICS Today Buoyancy constant = 0 -> layered flow Earth Improvements
70
PHOENICS Today Buoyancy constant = 1 -> Plume Earth Improvements
71
PHOENICS Today Calculated buoyancy constant Earth Improvements
72
PHOENICS Today Auto solution is somewhere between plume and layer! Earth Improvements
73
PHOENICS Today Geometry Creation We are often asked to create geometry from unusual sources. Recently we received a PDF file which contained this image-
74
PHOENICS Today Geometry Creation The numbers represent the height of the building
75
PHOENICS Today Geometry Creation The solution was to save the image as a GIF file, then use it as a backdrop in AC3D We could trace round each part, then extrude
76
PHOENICS Today The resulting geometry was then exported to PHOENICS Geometry Creation
