The First Ever Videogames There has been lots of debate over which video game console was the first. But the Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Deviceseemed to be the first. It was a missile simulator, made in 1947. It used plastic overlays for enemies, because graphics could not be drawn at the time.

The First Arcade Game The first coin-operated arcade game was Computer Space, which was a game where two players controlled a space ship each. They had to destroy each other, while navigating around a star, which sucked them closer.

The First Home Console The first home-console was the Magnavox Odyssey. It was released in 1972, around the same time PONG was released. It had to cubes with dials for controllers, and it used plastic overlays.

Nintendo Gameboy Line Gameboy It came out in 1989, and has used a green and black screen. Gameboy Play it Loud It came out in 1995. The big difference was that the plastic was available in different colours. Gameboy Pocket A lighter, smaller version of the Gameboy. It used less batteries. It was released in 1996. Gameboy Light Released in 1998,it had a stronger light, allowing people to play in darker conditions. It is very rare nowadays, being sold at triple digits.

Nintendo Gameboy Line (Continued) GameboyColor The GameboyColor came out 1998. It now had a color screen. Gameboy Advance Released in 2001, the Gameboy Advance introduced the right and left shoulder buttons. The cartridges now were smaller and different. Gameboy Advance SP It came out in 2003, and introduced a folding system, and a better backlight. The SP stands for special. A mark II was released, having better lighting. Gameboy Micro The Micro (bottom) was 10 inches wide, and 2 inches tall. It was released in 2005. It is compared to a DS here.

Nintendo DS Line DS The DS came out in 2004, and used touch screen. It had two screens, a concept which was new. DS lite The DS lite was released in 2006, and had new features like a microphone and wi-fi. It could also play GBA games. DSi Released in 2008, the Dsi had two cameras, and had larger screens. It also had a new menu system.

Nintendo DS Line (Continued) DSi XL It came out in 2009, and was simply the DSi but with larger screens and stylus. It was made this way so other people could surround the player and watch. 3DS The 3DS is supposed to be coming out early 2011, and it has 3D technology, without the glasses. It will have a slider to turn this option on and off, and will be able to play older DS games.

Nintendo Entertainment System The NES was released in 1983, and had and 8-bit processing system. This is probably one of the most celebrated retro game systems ever.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System Released in 1990, it had a 16 bit processing unit. It now introduced two more buttons, X and Y. Its best selling game was Super Mario World, which came with the console.

Nintendo 64 The N64 was released in 1996. It had a 64-bit processing system, and had a new, three pronged controller.

Nintendo Gamecube Released in 2001, the Gamecube introduced discs, rather than cartridges. The disks were small, not like CD disks.

Nintendo Wii The Wii came out in 2006, and had the new technology of motion tracking. Its disks were also CD size, and it could play gamecube games.

Sega SG-1000 Released in 1983, it was not the most popular console, but it laid down the base for the Sega Master System.

Sega Master System In 1985, the Sega Master System was released. It was an 8- bit console, made to be a direct competitor for the NES.

Sega Mega Drive Released in 1989, the Sega Mega Drive, also known as the Genesis, dominated the market. With 16-bit graphics, it rivaled the SNES.

Sega Saturn The Saturn was released in 1995, with a32-bit processing system. It competed against the Nintendo 64 and Sony Playstation, and ultimately failed.

Sega Dreamcast It was released in late 1998, and was hailed as ‘ahead of its time’. Although its life span was short, being discontinued in 2001, in Japan it sold until 2006. But in the end, it couldn’t compete with the Gamecube, Xbox, and Playstation 2.

Sega Gamegear Released 1990, the Gamegear was the third commercially available color handheld console. It was also Sega’s first handheld.

Sega Nomad Out in 1995, the Nomad was a portable version of the Sega Genesis. It could play the cartridges, and was the successor to the Sega Gamegear. It was also the last handheld Sega made.

Sony Playstation Available in 1994, it used CD’s to play. Originally a project between Sony and Nintendo, (the original console was named Nintendo Playstation), Nintendo decided not to make it. Sony continued, and created the Playstation. The prototype for the Nintendo Playstation. No one knows where it is.

Sony Playstation 2 Released in the year 2000, the PS2 succeeded the PS1, with better memory, graphics, and controllers. It also introduced online gameplay.

Sony Playstation 3 It came out in 2006, and has a sleeker, more modern design. It now had a home screen, and almost functioned like a computer. The controller vibrated and used Six-axis which, by tilting the controller, could affect the game play.

Sony Playstation Portable Released in 2004, the PSP-1000 was the first model to come out. It used UMD disks, that you would push in. It was followed by the PSP-2000, and 3000, which only had minor differences.

Sony Playstation Portable-GO A slight change to the older PSP’s, it was released in 2009. It did not use a UMD drive, rather an internal flash memory to store games, movies, and pictures. The top can slide up and down to make it more portable.

Classics Super Mario Bros. was released for the NES in 1985. Many sequels and remakes have been made, like: Super Mario Bros. 2 Super Mario Bros. Special Vs Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. 3 Super Mario Land Super Mario World And the list goes on… Legend of Zelda was released for the NES in 1987. It too spawned many sequels. A new Legend of Zelda; Skyward Sword, will be coming out soon.

Classics (Continued) Metroid was released in 1986, for the NES. It took place in a sci-fi universe, and was an action/shooter game. PONG was released in 1972 as an arcade game. It is a tennis game.
