Aim: What happens if the rate of mitosis is abnormal? HW: Castle Learning
3
What is the result of normal Mitosis? 1 cell forms 2 identical NEW healthy cells.
4
What happens if mitosis stops? Aging Death
5
What is this ? Cancer
6
What is the result of uncontrollable mitosis? Cancer: Uncontrolled cell division Abnormal Shape Abnormal function Starve the body’s other cells
7
Approximately 200 types Can you think of some? Lung cancer Skin cancer Breast cancer Prostate cancer
8
Cancer Tumors -Lumps or a mass of cancerous cells. Tumors can be : malignant (spread - dangerous) or benign (can’t spread – safe)
10
Metastasis Cancer cells also can spread, to other parts of the body and form new tumors. How do they spread? They spread by using the circulatory system and lymph nodes.
12
Lung Cancer: Healthy Lung Cancerous Lung
13
What causes cancer? Mutations - to genes, the cell's instructions for making the proteins it needs to survive, grow and multiply. Ultraviolet radiation Viruses Usually cancer is not inherited Carcinogens: chemicals Poor Diet Certain Pathogens (Viruses) Genetics UV Radiation (Sun) Drugs (Tobacco)
16
Anatomy of a Cigarette Smoking causes a third of all cases of cancer Cigarette smoke contains 3000 different chemicals.
17
Treatment Surgery: physical removal of the malignant tumor Radiation: disrupts cell division Chemotherapy: drugs that prevent cell division by interfering with mitosis
19
Prevention Don’t Smoke Wear Sunscreen Regular check-ups
