Page 2 Recombinant protein expression is the technique of target protein production using the recombinant DNA technology. It is now commonly used in bioresearch and in pharmaceutical production of recombinant protein therapeutics. The recombinant DNA, usually the cDNA sequence of the target protein, is designed to be under the control of a well characterized promoter and express the target protein within the chosen host cell to achieve high-level protein expression.

Page 3 Bacteria Expression Bacteria are the most widely used protein expression systems for their rapid growth, high yield, ease of manipulation and scale-up. The most widely used bacteria host is of course Escherichia coli. E. coli is the most established tool and is almost always the first choice if applicable. Profacgen offers various E. coli strains and expression vectors to seek for high- quality and high-level production of your target proteins.

Page 4 Yeast Expression Yeast is the simplest eukaryotic expression system. It sustains post-translational modification and proper folding of eukaryotic proteins, while still allows easy culture and scale-up production at relatively low cost. The two most commonly used yeast species are Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia pastoris.

Page 5 Insect Cell Expression Insect cells closely resemble mammalian cells and have better chances to produce soluble proteins with correct folding and high order posttranslational modifications compared to bacteria and yeast. Insect cell is also a recognized choice for membrane protein production!
