Warning system Alerts people when a storm is coming WSR-88D: World wide service radar that report storms with hail 1 inch or larger in diameter Lightning by itself is not reason for a warning. Last about 1 hour, Includes where the storm is located, What towns or area will be effected and the source of threat It may be combined with a flash flood warning People should seek shelter
4
After it has been issued, the affected NWFO will follow it up periodically with Severe Weather Statements. These statements will contain updated information on the severe thunderstorm and they will also let the public know when the warning is no longer in effect.
5
A severe thunderstorm by definition is a thunderstorm that produces one inch hail or larger in diameter and/or winds equal or exceed 58 miles an hour. The size of the watch can vary depending on the weather situation. They are usually issued for a duration of 4 to 8 hours. They are normally issued well in advance of the actual occurrence of severe weather. During the watch, people should review severe thunderstorm safety rules and be prepared to move a place of safety if threatening weather approaches.
6
During the watch, the NWFO will keep the public informed on what is happening in the watch area and also let the public know when the watch has expired or been cancelled.

A downburst is a result of a strong downdraft. A downburst is a strong downdraft with horizontal dimensions larger than 4 km (2.5 mi) resulting in an outward burst of damaging winds on or near the ground. (Imagine the way water comes out of a faucet and hits the bottom of the sink.) Downburst winds may begin as a microburst and spread out over a wider area, sometimes producing damage similar to a strong tornado. Although usually associated with thunderstorms, downbursts can occur with showers too weak to produce thunder.
10
A microburst is a small concentrated downburst that produces an outward burst of damaging winds at the surface. Microbursts are generally small (less than 4km across) and short-lived, lasting only 5-10 minutes, with maximum wind speeds up to 168 mph. There are two kinds of microbursts: wet and dry. A wet microburst is accompanied by heavy precipitation at the surface. Dry microbursts, common in places like the high plains and the intermountain west, occur with little or no precipitation reaching the ground
12
A gust front is the leading edge of rain-cooled air that clashes with warmer thunderstorm inflow. Gust fronts are characterized by a wind shift, temperature drop, and gusty winds out ahead of a thunderstorm. Sometimes the winds push up air above them, forming a shelf cloud or detached roll cloud.
13
A derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. A typical derecho consists of numerous microbursts, downbursts, and downburst clusters. By definition, if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles (about 400 kilometers) and includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph (93 km/h) or greater along most of its length, then the event may be classified as a derecho
14
A haboob is a wall of dust that is pushed out along the ground from a thunderstorm downdraft at high speeds.

Monday there were at least 12 reports of tornadoes as severe weather returned to parts of the Midwest. Winds caused structural damages, overturned trucks and downed trees and power lines. Damaging winds are the main threat with the severe storms Monday night into Tuesday, but large hail and a few tornadoes are also possible, according to weather.com meteorologist Brian Donegal. However, a repeat of last week's tornado outbreak is not expected. A twister was reported near Puxico, Kansas, near Interstate 70 near Exit 331, according to the National Weather Service

A likely tornado reported near Princeton, Minnesota, downed trees and power lines and tore off part of a roof Monday, according to the Associated Press. The storm also brought hail to the central and southern parts of the state. A spotter measured a hailstone of 4 inches near Cokato. Winds overturned a semi truck near Exit 313 on KS-177 and Interstate 70 in Manhattan, Kansas, Monday, NWS also reports. Thunderstorm wind damage was also reported in Iowa, where the doors were blown off a grain elevator and tin roofs were blown off of metal buildings.
18
A semi was also blown over on Highway 20 near Webster City, Iowa, according to NWS. Flash flooding was reported in downtown Kansas City and near Broadway Bridge. Part of a roof was blown off and power lines and trees were downed Monday in Minnesota as strong winds impacted the area. A large grain elevator collapsed and numerous buildings were damaged around the city of Freeborn. Winds ripped the roof off of a shed and tore a garage off of its foundation before demolishing it in Freeborn, Minnesota, Monday, also according to NWS. Trees were uprooted.
