3 Aetiology A rickettsia agent, Coxiella burnetti An obligate Intracellular parasite Hardy organism

4 Zoonosis Has zoonotic importance. Major source : Sheet and cattle Human infection causes: Fever Headache And less commonly pneumonia, hepatitis, meningoencephalitis, endocarditis

5 Transmission Inhalation and direct contact. Venereal transmission Major transmission and infection at the time of parturition Not vector dependent as are other rickettsials Infection by inhalation mainly in humans

6 Pathophysiology Infection Remains silent until pregnancy Infection of intestine, uterus, placenta and udder Shred in their secretions High concentration in placenta and fetal fluid and vaginal fluids In urine secretions In feaces in 11-18 days post-partum May cause abortion, still births, poor lamb

7 Clinical signs Infection may occur at any age Clinically Inapparent Abortion in sheep and goat in advanced pregnancy (as infectious so there would be many abortions) No sign that abortion is near to occur

8 Post Mortem Findings Seldom gross lesion in fetus however focal necrosis and inflammation in liver, lung, kidney microscopically Thickened placenta, red brown necrotic foci in thickened inter cotyledonary areas Necrotic neutrophilic aggregation on chorion Swollen trophoblast cells filled with microbe
