Political map Physical map Topographic map Relife map Elevation map Contour map Land-use Resource map Climatic map Thematic map There are many different types of maps to show different types of information.

Political Maps o Maps showing cities, towns, villages, and different countries and states with their boundaries o Different colors show man-made divisions of land o Colors make it easy to compare size, shape, location o Bold letters often make the country names stand out o Capital city is usually marked with a star within a circle o Name certain physical features, such as rivers, lakes

Physical Map o Highlights the physical features of the earth eg mountains, plateaus, plains, rivers, oceans o Green is usually used at lower elevations, orange or brown show higher elevations o Colors on the map can stand for types of vegetation, mountain, natural features o Names of big natural features are easy to see o Physical maps also include some political information, such as boundaries

Land Use Resource Map These maps show how land is being used: o Vegetation o Crops being grown o Forest Vs agriculture o Mines and wells o City zone

Topographic Map o Represent a small area with a lot of details o Include contour lines to show the shape and elevation o Lines that are close together show steep terrain; lines that are far apart show flat terrain o Geologists depend on topographic maps to record the types of rocks o Engineers use topographic maps when they are planning roads, buildings

Contour maps Contour lines represent the elevation at that line. If you were to walk across a line, you are changing elevation.

Climate Map o The climate of a place is the weather it has season by season, year after year o Rainfall and temperature are climate’s main ingredients o Climate is affected by elevation, distance from the ocean, and latitude

Thematic Map o Shows information about specific topics of an area, eg climate, precipitation, weather, vegetation, crops, population, religion, life expectancy, etc o Generally used when we are looking at a single piece of information o Easy to understand

Locator Map (Inset) o It shows where in the world the area on a map is located o It is a map that looks at a location from a more zoomed out perspective

Cadastral map o French word ‘cadastre’ means register of territorial property o Drawn on a large scale, such as in the villages at 1:4,000 and in the cities at 1:2,000 o Drawn to show the ownership of landed property o Prepared by the government agencies to realize revenue and taxes, along with keeping a record of ownership
