7 About our school ~470 Students 26 different languages in our homes!
One of 55 Loudoun elementary schools One of 84 schools overall Only 4 schools are older and unrenovated! Aldi, Banneker, Lincoln, and Hillsboro [charter] Combined attendance of these four is = ~497 Info from: 119/FY16-FY20%20School%20Board%20Adopted%20CIP.pdf

8 About our school, cont’d
Sugarland and Meadowland have same design Very similar demographics Sugarland ES: Built in 1975 Major renovation in 2007 (32 years old) Meadowland ES: Built in 1979 Slated for renovation by 2018 (age 39), but was removed due to ‘low interest’ Info from: 119/FY16-FY20%20School%20Board%20Adopted%20CIP.pdf

12 County School Assessment
Schools evaluated based on the score sheet Current county building standards set top score at 250 50 areas examined, then scored into 4 major categories: (25%) Site & Exterior Envelope (25%) Interior Environment, Safety and ADA (15%) Accessibility Plan and Program Adequacy (35%) Mechanical and Electrical Systems Meadowland rated 131 out of 250 points (~52%) Only 6 Elementary schools* rated lower ( ) Only 3 rated lower for plan/program adequacy and internal safety/accessibility *Not counting the small schools

13 Assessment Findings Floor plan is inefficient (especially bathrooms)
No clean circulation loop All classrooms have original, worn casework Chalkboards need to be converted to marker boards Lintels have rust and peeling paint Color on the upper façade is leaching onto the brick below it Damaged and deteriorating masonry and cracking starting to appear in walls and floors Roof is ballasted EPDM and the roof ladder does not have a safety pole Pavement/curbs failing; kiss-n-ride non-ADA compliant Opportunity for landscaping Antiquidated clock system No automated lighting control present, such as occupancy sensors Several interior lighting fixtures not working

14 Assessment Recommendations
Needed to meet full ADA compliance: Stage, Restrooms, and Signage To meet LCPS facility standards: Convert chalkboards to marker boards Add dedicated toilets in kindergarten, 2nd & special ed classrooms Add enclosed media center with office Dedicate gym space with storage and PE office Add dedicated guidance room Clinic requires sink Add acoustical wall panels to cafeteria Relocated kiln to art storage Change wall partitions to fixed CMU walls

15 Assessment Recommendations
Additional recommendations: North wing should be enclosed for security purposes Fix pavement and sidewalk failures/settlement Landscaping Replace corroded bolts for Basketball Backboards Clean/paint exposed steel lintels, repair breezeway deck Brick masonry needs control joints (cracks forming) Cooling tower steel – clean and paint with cold galvanizing paint Sprinkler is a limited area sprinkler system Chiller utilizes older R-22 refrigerant (ozone depleting) Upgrade lighting systems and power Egress lighting at exit doors should be addressed. Add automated lighting control Address unsightly exposed conduit & raceway in the corridors
