Sustainability at Kingston University
Kingston’s Led By Learning strategy (KU, 2012) states that “we will act ethically to minimize our impact on the environment; we will include issues relating to sustainability and ethics in the curriculum” (clause 3.2); and “we will demonstrate the economic, social, cultural impact of our research and how it benefits individuals, the community and the environment.” (Clause 2.6)

Education for Sustainable Development(ESD)
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) aims to enable the next generation of leaders to imagine and create more sustainable futures for people and planet. ESD is relevant to any course and any career path.

Under the 3rd principle of the Inclusive Curriculum:

B! Employers seek for graduates who are aware of the current sustainability challenges and have the knowledge and the skills to address them through their profession. Currently there is a gap in these skills. (UN Global Compact, Global Opportunity Report, 2015)

Q.4 As a student sitting in validation and review panels
There is nothing I can do for embedding sustainability in KU courses B. I am key in embedding sustainability in KU courses by ensuring that there is consistency with the Revised Academic Framework and the Curriculum Design Principles during validation and review panels

B! Does the course allow students to bring to bear their knowledge and skills on current issues of global concern (sustainability; human rights; ethical practice and behaviour; diversity etc)?

Content Teaching and Learning Assessment
Has the course team ensured that students take into account the environmental, economic, social and ethical context that affect debates and thinking within their subject area? Are there any opportunities for incorporating stimulus activities, case studies, discussion-based learning, and democratic/participatory approaches in the T&L Strategy that could allow the exchange of divergent views for deep and critical reflection? Are there any opportunities for students to demonstrate achievement of the University’s Graduate’s attributes and particularly global awareness? Are there any synoptic assessments that explore understanding of the relationship between the course and the wider socioeconomic and environmental issues?

Q.5 I want to embed sustainability
in KU courses: A. But I have no support or guidance B. But there is no university team leading on Sustainability in Kingston that can advise and support C. The Sustainability Hub can guide me and support me with gaining a better understanding of how each course relates to sustainability (content, teaching and learning and assessment)
