1 Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) in Horizon 2020
Daniela Corda Institute of Protein Biochemistry, CNR, Napoli; Delegate for Italy in the ERC, Marie Slodowska-Curie Actions, Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) configurations of Horizon 2020

2 Three strategic priorities:
[Horizon 2020] The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation A core part of Europe 2020, Innovation Union & European Research Area: Responding to the economic crisis to invest in future jobs and growth Addressing people’s concerns about their livelihoods, safety and environment Strengthening the EU’s global position in research, innovation and technology Three strategic priorities: Open Innovation: combining diverse sources of knowledge Open Science: open access, research integrity Open to the World: science diplomacy, global scientific and technological collaboration to remain relevant and competitive 2

3 Industrial Leadership
[Horizon 2020 Structure] Excellent Science Industrial Leadership Societal Challenges European Research Council Frontier research by the best individual teams Future and Emerging Technologies Collaborative research to open new fields of innovation Marie Skłodowska Curie actions Opportunities for training and career development Research infrastructures (including e-infrastructure) Ensuring access to world-class facilities Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies ICT, nanotechnologies, materials, biotechnology, manufacturing, space Access to risk finance Leveraging private finance and venture capital for research and innovation Innovation in SMEs Fostering all forms of innovation in all types of SMEs Health, demographic change and wellbeing Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research & the bio- economy Secure, clean and efficient energy Smart, green and integrated transport Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies Secure society

4 FET: Novel ideas for radically new technologies visionary thinking
… but very concrete mission € 2.6 billion to initiate radically new lines of technologies In FET new ideas are stated and explored for the first time, and they inspire the rest of Europe to be bold about our possible future. The same holds for the future leaders: together with the renewal of ideas, FET, and FET-Open in particular, aims to attract new high-potential players to its projects. The young but brilliant researchers of today, and the small hihg-tech companies or start-ups may become the future leaders or science and industry. Finally FET is a place to experiment with new R&I practices. In the non-conventional kind of projects that FET-Open is funding, new methods are needed. In particular we seek new ways to link the creativity at the level of research to the European social and economic fabric so that it can produce results that will really matter for our future. collaborative research extend Europe’s capacity for advanced and paradigm-changing innovation. foster scientific collaboration across disciplines on radically new, high-risk ideas

5 Exploration and Incubation Large-Scale Partnering Initiatives
[FET Pathfinding Europe's technological future] Open, light and agile Roadmap based research Individual research projects FET-Open Early Ideas Topical clusters of research projects FET Proactive Exploration and Incubation Common research agendas FET Flagships Large-Scale Partnering Initiatives Exploring Developing Addressing novel ideas topics & communities grand challenges

6 [FET : Main Lines of activities]
FET Open supports the early-stages of the science and technology research and innovation around new ideas towards radically new future technologies. It also funds coordination and support activities for such high-risk forward looking research to prosper in Europe. -> Initial stages of developing ideas into a proof-of-concept FET Proactive addresses promising directions for research on future technologies in order to build up a European critical mass of knowledge and excellence around them. -> Being “lighthouse” and reference for others (community building), within which the technology and its uses can be taken up in the future. FET Flagships are science-driven, large-scale, multidisciplinary research initiatives oriented towards a unifying goal, aiming at transformational impacts with substantial benefits for European competitiveness and for society.
