1 Cancer Overview Streamlined
History of cancer First discovery First metastasis knowledge Statistics of cancer Worldwide USA Why has cancer statistics grown? Are there more deaths today than years before

2 History of Cancer Many people wrongfully believe that cancer is a new disease. There is evidence of bone cancer (Osteosarcoma) even in mummies1. The oldest known mention of cancer is in a text from around 3000 years ago called the Edwin Smith Papryus2 They removed the cancer with a tool called the fire drill. I’m pretty sure this was code for “hurts like heck.”

3 History of Cancer Origin of the term “cancer”
Greek Physician~Hippocrates ( BC) Used 2 terms Carcinos and Carcinoma to refer to ulcer forming and non-ulcer forming tumors respectively It is believed because the finger like projections reminded him of the pincers on the crab Roman Physician~Celsus (28-50 AD) Translated the terms Hippocrates used to the Latin term “cancer” which means crab Greek Physician~Galen ( AD) Used the greek term “oncos” to mean swelling It’s important to understand how the discovery of cancer was made. To know where you are headed you must know where you came from

4 History of Cancer Metastasis
It really wasn’t until centuries later that pathology could be used to understand that tumors or cancers could metastasize This became the basis of linking cellular knowledge to disease, disease spread, and death These theories may seem silly now, but using the scientific method in a time where people used outhouses made for large discoveries and actually led to patient’s lives being saved through surgery

5 Statistics of Cancer USA statistics Global Statistics
In 2016, there will be an estimated 1,685,210 new cancer cases diagnosed and 595,690 cancer deaths in the US3 Global Statistics These statistics come from 2012/2013 In 2012 there were 14.1 million new cancer cases It is thought that by 2030 there will be 27 million new cancer cases4

6 Why has Cancer Statistics Grown
In 1970s only about 1 in 2 survived past 5 years now 2 in 3. That is a large statistical significance It is true that cancer disease has grown, but many cancers have been eradicated through lowering people’s exposures to carcinogens Includes scrotum cancer due to exposure to chimney sweeping soot Mesothelioma due to reduction of exposure to asbestos The average cancer in children is due to genetic changes not exposure to environment Cancer is an accumulation of genetics, environment, and nurturing of an internal environment that promotes tumorigenesis such as obesity, smoking, and diabetes

7 Why has Cancer Statistics Grown?
Age5 Age has so much to do with the increase in cancer statistics that natural news sources shove down its reader’s throats The average age use to be only 30 years. Can you imagine? The AVERAGE human regardless of gender lived only until 30 Technology and advancement started increasing life expectancy around the 19th century Life expectancy in the US is now over 70 and in Japan now over 80 Child mortality A decrease in child mortality is also cause of an increase in life expectancy An increase in life span means an increase in accumulation of genetic errors as well as damage through environmental factors and a human’s lifestyle

8 More Cancer Deaths Today than Before?
This concept is thought of to be simple to understand but in all honesty is extremely complex It involves the theory that is called “lifetime risk” meaning that the average child born to an average parent living an average life will have a lifetime risk of developing cancer and what is that lifetime risk So the short answer is no there is actually less cancer deaths than before, but that’s a loaded question and answer 1 in 4 use to survive just 40 years ago and now it’s 2 in 46

9 Conclusion Cancer is not a disease that can be defined by a simple term with simple statistics It is a disease that involves genetics, environmental factors, living, and internal personal choice factors Cancer is a disease that can develop quickly or take decades Curing cancer is going to include scientists and physicians all over the world coming together with one goal to understand the life and death of cancer and how it relates to its human host
