NUMERACY: Ordering – timelines in history. Number & Place Value To recognise the place value of each digit in a three-digit number (H,T,O). To identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations. To solve number and practical problems involving three digit numbers. Able to write numbers to at least 1000. Addition & Subtraction To add and subtract numbers with up to three digits, using the formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction. To solve problems involving place value and more complex addition and subtraction. (Missing numbers). Multiplication & Division To write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using multiplication tables, two-digit x one digit, using mental and formal written methods. (Arrays and grid method). To solve missing number problems involving multiplication and division. Measures – mass, volume, capacity – see Science. SCIENCE: Forces and Magnets Compare how things move on different surfaces – Ramps of various textures, testing with cars. Notice that some forces need contact between two objects, but magnetic forces can act at a distance. Observe how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not others. Compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet, and identify some magnetic materials. Describe magnets as having two poles. Predict whether two magnets will attract or repel each other, depending on which poles are facing. ENTERPRISE: Financial literacy – Not a focus this term. LITERACY: READING Non-fiction texts prioritised due to the heavy emphasis on narrative this term in Year 3. WRITING Narrative – Conqueror will spend extended periods of time looking at the key features of narrative, using different feedback techniques to improve the sections of a story. Greater use of “slow writing” to enable children to consider the reason for the techniques they use. T4W and drama to be used to enhance writing. Descriptive writing – Using their senses, children to write about different events linked to topic. Computer game reviews. SPaG Children will recap classifying words. Inverted commas used with direct speech, commas and apostrophes will all be taught this half term. Direct speech taught using comic strips and text messages alongside all elements of literacy (linked to computing).
